Another year almost over and done. At the end of the year, most people like to look back and think of all the things they feel blessed about, and take stock in things they'd like to change. For many, the passage of another year is spent celebrating the New Year drinking with friends and family.
It's New Year's Eve Eve, and as I think about how blessed we are, I can't help but think of those who will "celebrate" a little too much tomorrow night and still need to find their way home. There are many services in the area that specifically on New Years Eve or even all year round provide a service to pick up those who need a ride home after a night of drinking. Many of these services will also drive your car home for you. Here's a little list of designated driver services)...

Best Proximity
One of the things I love most about living in Waterdown is how close it is to so many cool things to do. 45 minutes and you are in Toronto, 45 minutes and you are in Niagara on the Lake, and hour and you are at the border to the US in Niagara Falls, 45 minutes to Oktoberfest in Kitchener and an hour til you are in Stratford.
Living in Southern Ontario we are such a short drive to so many great amenities and to me, Waterdown is the centre to easily get to so many wonderful places. Hamilton and Burlington are a mere 15 minutes away (or less depending on which area you need to get to). My husband grew up in Toronto and was very used to traffic and how much longer it took to get anywhere downtown if something big was going on. A few years ago he went to a Bruce Springsteen Concert (his very favourite singer) at Copps Colliseum in Hamilton. I told him where to park so he could get out quick and easy. From his seat at Copps, trying to beat the crowd to the parking lot, getting out of the parking lot and home to our front door was 20 minutes! Normally, it would only take 10 minutes to get from Copps to our home. Gotta like that kind of traffic.
There are so many great things to see and do in this fantastic area. At this time of year, my all time favourite thing is to see the National Ballet's Nutcracker at the Four Season's Centre in Toronto. I am now spoiled by this version, and everything else just seems to pale in comparison. I've taken my daughters to see the Nutcracker for the last 4 years, and last year I was so honoured to be able to take my Nan from Nova Scotia there to see the National Ballet's Nutcracker. She had never been to the ballet (in her 86 years) and certainly there was nothing like that available to her living in rural Nova Scotia. We've been too busy this year to get tickets, but we really MUST make it next year. Hardly feels like Christmas without seeing it. Of course, each time we go to the Four Season's Centre to see the Nutcracker, we MUST walk just further down Queen Street to see the Bay Christmas Windows, also make it up inside the Bay to Christmas Street to see the decorations and finally to go into the Eaton's Centre and marvel at the GIGANTIC Swarovski Christmas Tree. It's incredible and everyone needs to see it at least once, especially on a sunny day when the sunlight from the skylights just make the crystals twinkle like fireworks.
Waterdown is such a fantastic town, but drive around a little and you will come across alot of great venues and activities not a very far distance from town. What's that saying from Ontario Tourism... Ontario, Your's to Discover!

Best Old Fashioned Christmas
As a young girl growing up on episodes of "Little House on the Prairie", I've had a romanticized view of what life was like as a "pioneer". I've always enjoyed visiting Westfield Heritage Village, in the town of Rockton which is only 20 minutes away from Waterdown. It is run by Conservation Hamilton and is open Sundays or holidays April through October, 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm with special programs running in December for Christmas and March for Maple Syrup season. I highly recommend going for the Christmas celebrations. There is a certain magic to the all the buildings and seeing the way Christmas was celebrated long before the commercialism of what we know now.
You can enjoy a leisurely day in the country as you visit over thirty five historical buildings or walk on our picturesque nature trails. Log cabins, one room school house, blacksmith shop, railway station, general store, steam locomotive and many other destinations interpreted by enthusiastic and knowledgeable costumed interpreters make your visit something special for the whole family. Don’t forget to drop in at the General Store soda shop for a light lunch, indulge in Eddie D. Cat confections or purchase one of a kind items in our gift shop. Tours are self guided or with a costumed guide on the hour.
In December, they run special programs to celebrate Christmas. This year you can visit
Saurday, December 3, 10 & 17, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm for ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas
Celebrate Christmas past from Georgian times to the modern era. Feel the warmth of the season through food samples, fireworks , horse and wagon rides, and a visit from Saint Nick. Eddie D. Cat Confectionery offers a wide range of sweet treats for the season or visit our one-of-a-kind Gift Shop for the perfect Christmas gift. Special event prices apply for this event – though you may use your Nature’s Rewards pass for this event.
Enjoy an old fashioned Christmas and celebrate the season where traditions of an earlier time are brought to life. Join the parties, enjoy the food and shop for that special someone

Best Parade
"It's the most wonderful time of the year...." I've always loved Christmas-time. Truth be told, I love all the lead up to Christmas... the decorating, the visiting, the shopping... and I love the Waterdown Santa Clause Parade. What's great about the Waterdown parade is that it starts at 630pm and every float is decorated with lots of lights to really bring out the festive mood.
I also love that, each float that goes by we seem to say "Oh look there's...." I've mentioned many times in my blog that the longer you live in Waterdown and get to know your neighbours and local business people, you just can't seem to go far without running into someone you know.
For me, after Santa of course, I love to see the pets they bring out for Flamborough Adoptions... all kinds of happy doggies on leash running along the street (usually dressed up in costume, coat or lights) with volunteers from the Shelter.
It's always interesting to see what floats are the same, what ones are new and ones that have alot of creativity to them.
This year the pararde happens Saturday November 26th, beginning at 630pm. Early in the day, people begin putting out their chairs along the parade route to reserve their spot. I'm always impressed by how people respect that and don't move the chairs. People are also very good about making sure that little kids can see everything as well and help to move them up to the front.
This year is going to be fantastic just for the weather alone. Sunny with a daytime high of 12C and possibly a low of 8C and clear skies in the evening... that's my kind of weather!
Don't forget your loonies for the loonie bin, letters for Santa and socks & mitts to give to Helping Hands. Hope to see you there! Merry Christmas.

Best Christmas Home Tour
I have to be upfront here... I am a little prejudiced in this category, but I have to say that the Drummond House Christmas Home Tour, Bake Sale and Silent Auction is the BEST kick off to the Holiday Season in Waterdown. The reason I am prejudiced is because I have been on the Organizational Team for this event for the last 5 years.
The Open House began 6 years ago as small event to invite the public to come into the home, see it decorated for Christmas and for people to learn about what Drummond House does. Today the Christmas Home Tour, Bake Sale & Silent Auction has grown into one of the biggest fundraisers Drummond House does. I am honoured to hear that people think the quality of decorating has been compared to the Junior League Home Tour. Each year the event has gotten bigger and bigger. This year it has grown so much that the Bake Sale and Silent Auction along with a few other sale items (Antique Sale & Toonie Sale) have been re-located next door to Drummond House at the Flamborough Baptist Church.
Unlike the Junior League Home Tour, THERE IS NO CHARGE TO VIEW Drummond House. Since it is fully self funded charity, DONATIONS ARE GREATLY ACCEPTED. Visitors are also encouraged to take photos of the decorations and use ideas showcased in their own homes for Christmas Decorating.
You can read more about the Christmas Home Tour, Bake Sale & Silent Auction in the Flamborough Review article... http://www.flamboroughreview.com/community/drummond-house-set-for-tour/
Each year, I get the pleasure to serve up complimentary hot apple cider to visitors as they visit the last room in the house... the kitchen. I hope you will join me Saturday November 19th between 10a-4p at Drummond House.

Best Entertainment
Every town should have a great community theatre, and in Waterdown we have the Village Theatre. It's a great little gem in the heart of the Waterdown Core, right on Dundas Street between Main and Mill... couldn't get more central than that!
They just finished up "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and currently getting ready for their next play "The Mousetrap".
A little about the Villiage Theatre from their website...
Operating out of the Memorial Hall in the centre of Waterdown, Ontario, Canada for over thirty years, Village Theatre is a community theatre group which produces challenging and entertaining drama, comedy, sometimes even some music! We provide a creative outlet for close to 100 local actors, directors, designers and backstage crew. Many others join simply for the fun and friendship of getting a show on stage. | We're proud of our reputation as the group which does what others wouldn't dare, with memorable productions by playwrights such as Dario Fo, Michel Tremblay and Anouilh; with plays like Top Girls, Equus and Love For Love. We also produce a full-scale children’s play as part of our regular season, giving many children the opportunity to perform. | Recent renovations to Memorial Hall, funded by Village Theatre through various grants, means a classier, more versatile venue that welcomes our audience with style. If you're looking for a social group where you can work hard for no pay, to create magical moments that disappear as soon as they're reached, then you're as crazy as we are - you may as well join us! |

Best Holiday Decor Shopping
Yes, Halloween is still 3 days away... but have you seen the stores in the last two weeks??? Right after Thanksgiving most stores started stocking shelves, decorating trees and spaces with CHRISTMAS!!! Alright, I must confess... I usually start thinking about Christmas decorating in the summer. One of my favourite shops in the US is Hobby Lobby (think of a cross between Home Sense and Michaels) and during our summer vacation they have already started selling Christmas merchandise (they stock shelves as of July 1st!!).
I must admit that I have already been to Pier 1 Imports, Canadian Tire, Walmart, Bouclair Home and The Bay to check out their Christmas stuff. But what I really look forward to seeing are the local nurseries and what they come up with. New trends, new themes and great decorating ideas.
Holland Park Galley in Burlington has THE biggest display of Christmas I've seen on this side of the border. Next weekend is their Christmas Open House. Christmas Elves (decorators) are already busy decorating over a dozen different trees with different themes. This place does not disappoint. There just has to be a tree that will appeal to you! The Open House takes place Friday November 4th from 630p - 9p and Saturday November 5th from 630p - 9p. During the Open House hours, Holland Park Garden Gallery will pay the equivalent of the HST on your entire purchase. Nice! To learn more about Holland Park please visit their website.
http://gardengallery.ca/hollandpark/
Two other great places to see Christmas decor ideas in and around Waterdown are Terra Greenhouses (5th Concession and Highway 6) and Connon Nurseries. Terra will have their own Christmas Open House on Saturday November 19th and Sunday November 20th. To view more about Terra and Connons, please visit their websites at:
http://terragreenhouses.com/ and http://www.connon.ca/
Both Terra and Connon's give back to their community. For Christmas, Terra has their Poinsettia Fundraising Program and Connon's partners with local organizations (like my daughters Dance School "Live Dream Dance") and anyone who mentions a participating organization at the cashier, Connon's will donate the equivalent of 10% of the total purchase to the organization. Great decor, great service, great product and great charitable donations... what's not to love about our local nurseries???
May I be the first to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas (and a Happy Halloween! ;-)

Best Girls Night Out
Three or Four years ago I was given a free ticket to attend the Soroptimist International DAF (Dundas/Ancaster/Flamborough) Annual Christmas Auction & Girls Night Out. What a fun event. It is indeed mostly women there, but there are male friends who attend the event as well. I had so much fun, that I make sure that I make time to go now every year.
You can arrive as early as 530p to preview all of the items up for auction and you are given a program so you can go through the items and mark your favourites so you know what you'd like to bid on.
There are several different lots depending on the cost of the items given away. There is loonie items, toonie items and there are a few five dollar grand prize items. In each of the lots are a number of items and you bid on the whole lot. You can purchase more than one entry into each lot. You are given a number(s) based on how many chances you buy. Then when everyone has a number they pull the numbers and give away the prizes within the lot. So for a buck you could walk away with a great prize! There are usually about a hundred or so items so with many people bidding on items you might have a 1 in 20 chance of walking away with your item. Pretty good odds!
In addition to winning items through the auction, there are also enough door prizes so that everyone walks away with something.
The meal is great, the ladies are all fabulous and it is a really wonderful way to spend an evening before the craziness of Christmas before you get into December.
The early bird deadline has already passed, and tickets are going quickly. If you and some of your girlfriends are interested in a fun night out while helping local women's charities, I encourage you to get a ticket real soon. Information on getting tickets is on the mini poster at the top left hand corner.

Best Waterfalls
Did you know that Hamilton is the "Waterfall Capital of the World"?? It is... and Waterdown is within the City of Hamilton. The biggest one in Waterdown is the "Great Falls" or is more commonly known as the "Grindstone Falls" located in Smokey Hollow, the dip in the road where Mill Street South turns into Waterdown Road. I took this picture there the other morning...
To view the whole list of Waterfalls within Hamilton, click on the name of the Falls listed below or please visit htttp://www.cityofwaterfalls.ca
The colours around the falls are just beautiful. Autumn is my favourite season and this is one of my favourite places to go to enjoy the beauty of nature. There are all kinds of hiking trails around the falls too, including a path for the Bruce Trail. Other waterfalls in the area are Borer's Falls, Clappison Falls, Hidden Grindstone Falls, and a bunch of other little recognized falls. The biggest in the area is Webster's Falls in Greensville. People drive from all over southern Ontario to see the beauty and majesty of Webster's Falls. A must go destination for anyone who lives in the area.

Best Fall Fair
Hard to believe, but I grew up in Hamilton and have lived in Waterdown for 9 years now, but last year was the FIRST TIME I ever made it to the Rockton Worlds Fair. I had heard about it each year growing up but never did make it there until last year. So much fun to take our kids on the rides of the midway, check out all of the judged exhibits (school projects, baking, produce, animals etc...)
Here's a little bit of the history of the fair from their webiste http://www.rocktonworldsfair.com/
"The Rockton Agricultural Society has come a long way since the first Beverly Agricultural Society Fair was held in October 1852.
According to the information recorded in " The Pioneers of Beverly ", October 20th was a " Glorious Indian Summer Day ". There were 181 members and prize money paid to the exhibitor's was $194.50. Compare this to today's volunteer membership of 500 and prize money of $80, 000 paid to over 1200 exhibitors.
In 1934 the Beverly Agricultural Society became the North Wentworth Agricultural Society and in 1966 the name was changed to the present Rockton Agricultural Society.
In 1878 Andrew Kernighan commented that the fair should be called the "World's Fair" because all of the world comes to it. The next day local newspapers carried an article about the fair entitled "The World's Fair at Rockton".
The Rockton World's Fair has grown tremendously since 1852. There truly is something for everyone. Each year sees new features added, along with the tried and true that have been a part of this great agricultural show for decades.
Today Thanksgiving weekend hosts an attendance of 100,000 people, bringing Urban and Rural together.
Agriculture is the highlight of the fair and education of agriculture is our objective."
The fair is held each year on Thanksgiving Weekend, and it runs from Friday October 7th to Monday October 10th. This year is the 159th Anniversary! A great place to go with the family if you need walk around to work off that Turkey Dinner! Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Best Medical Clinic
There are many things associated with "Back to School", and this week we were reminded that usually by the end of September our household generally is attacked by the Flu/Cold bug. Luckily, lots of rest and some over the counter meds to soothe symptoms have us on the road to recovery.
I have heard good things about many of the doctors and medical clinics in town, but I really have to toot the horn of the clinic that we go to... Carlisle Medical Centre. Our family joined the clinic not long after moving to Waterdown from Toronto late 2002. Our youngest daughter has been going there since birth.
What I love about the clinic is that although you have a personal doctor, if they are not available you can see anyone on staff. The single best factor about belonging to CMC is that there is always a doctor on call, and if you have an illness that does not require going to the Emergency Deptarment, you can page the doctor on call and after discussing syptoms on the phone will meet you at the clinic and assess you if you need it. This happened to me two weekends in a row in May 2007. It was a Saturday and I was in absolute agony... the cold I had all week ended up becoming a sinus infection over the weekend and I called the on call doctor and they met me up there 5pm on a Saturday, checked me out and gave me a perscription. I took the perscription all week and it seemed to be clearing up my sinus infection, but by the following weekend (the May Long Weekend!) I was breaking out in a rash all over. I again called the clinic on the Saturday of the long weekend, discussed my symptoms and was told to meet the doctor up at the clinic. Discovered that I had a sulfa allergy and the perscription I had been given was sulfa based. This was the first time I had ever had this happen. The doctors at CMC are all so fantastic, and even on a long weekend made me feel like my health was most important.
More recently, we took our oldest daughter in this summer on a weekend when her high fever went into Day 3 with no sign of coming down. Turned out she had strep throat and after bringing her in to see the on call doctor, we were sent home with a perscription and peace of mind that the fever might finally break.
At CMC, they have new doctors still accepting patients (a family Dr. accepting new patients is difficult these days), and older more experienced doctors... there are male doctors and female doctors and Nurse Practicioners.
I have always been very pleased with the service at CMC and have enjoyed the added benefits of X-Ray/Ultrasound and a Lab on site. Our family highly recommends the service and doctors of Carlisle Medical Centre. To view more about them please visit...

Best Fall Fun
Fall is my very favourite time of the year, and one of the things I love about living in Waterdown is all the great local farms in such close proximity.
It would be very difficult to choose which one is the very best so I recommend visiting them ALL! There are things I love about all of these local farms...
Frootogo is a must each year for our family. We love to take the tractor pulled wagon out to the HUGE pumpkin patch and pick our pumpkin. Pumpkins are all still growning on the vine so bring a little knife (not too sharp to be carrying around though) so you can cut off your pumpkin. Beautiful scenery riding out to the patch on the wagon = great fun. After you get your pumpkins grab a cart and some apple baskets and then head over to the orchard to pick some of your own apples right off the tree. Apples just taste better when you picked them yourself. After you've got those done then seeing the animals, running through the corn maze, jumping in the hay, and little ones will love all the great toddler slides and "Little Tykes" type toys. The market there is full of fresh produce and delicious treats... from pies, crumbles, fudge, biscuits, cookies, candy apples, jams and preserves, and make sure you get a warm apple dumpling! So good and not to be missed. To learn more visit their website: http://www.frootogo.ca/section/view/
Just down from Frootogo on Parkside Drive is Parkside Farms. What I love about them is the great selection of fresh produce. One time I was in during the summer to get corn and asked the guy working there how fresh was the corn? He replied "Just picked 20 minutes ago!" That's fresh!!! There was also a nice selection of flower bunches from flowers grown on the farm. What is best about this farm is the people... a family business since 1964 and always great people working there. For families, kids will enjoy in the fall Storybook Forest, the Corn Maze and Boo Barn. To learn more check out their website: http://www.parksidefarms.com/
About 20 minutes outside of Waterdown is one of the best Farms in the area for Fall Entertainment. Not only do they have all the typical attractions like the wagon ride and the pumpkin patch but they also have a haunted barn and the best fun of all is the piggy races... not to be missed. Unfortunately, this farm is only open weekends in October, but this year in 2011 the farm is closed. Their website:
http://www.yeehawadventurefarm.com/ states that they have been working on a concept for television for the last two years and this year they are taping a video at the farm. Hope they are open in 2012 so we can bring our family there again.
Last but not least is Dyments. If you are looking for the best scenic wagon ride, you can't beat the beauty of this farm. The amazing views of Dundas as you go along the trail of the escarpment are breathtaking. The other part of the Dyment farm I really enjoy is the Animal Farm. So many different animals and opportunities to get up close and pet them. There always seems to be baby animals around too!! Another great attraction at Dyments is the Spook Hut and Spookley Theatre. Little children are scared by the Spook Hut so kids under 4 or 5 years old might want to skip that part. Of course there is lots of great items in the gift shop and make sure you drive down the road and stop at the Dyments Market and Bakery. Yum!! To learn more about Dyments, please check out their website http://dyments.com/
I hope you and your family get out and enjoy some of the great local farms this Fall.

Best Sweet Temptation
A great new business opened it's doors in Waterdown this week... and my girls and I there for Opening Day. We were excited when we first saw the sign for Atomic Cupcakes go up in July and after delays from the city getting permits, it finally opened this past Monday (Aug. 29th) for a sneak peek. Shop owner Jessica Sykes is in the shop everyday (closed Sundays) whipping up countless batches of fresh cupcakes. A special official Grand Opening celebration is planned for Saturday September 10th.
I was able to chat with Jessica on Monday and ask her a few questions (a first for me to personally interview someone for my blog ;-)
Q: What are your favourite flavours of cupcake that you make?
A: My favourites are mint, peanut butter, carrot cake (she also had just come up with a great new flavour that she wanted to try a cupcake with a Nutella Buttercream icing that she was sure would be right up there as one of her favourites.)
Q: Will you have standard flavours and a daily selection or will there be the same flavours everyday?
A: We will have a standard set of flavours, the vanilla/chocolate combos will always be available. The Peanut Butter Cup and Peppermint Patty Cake will almost always be available. I'll try to have one more Classic and two Gourmets available as well. Add that to two flavours of Whoopie Pie (an inside out cupcake) and a cake plate dedicated to minis and I will have a full counter. My goal is to post on Facebook what flavours I'll be serving that day. (note - see their facebook fan page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Atomic-Cupcakes/133129253367010 )
Q: Why did you choose Waterdown as a location for your business?
A: As a location for an upcoming independent business, Waterdown has alot going for it. It still carries a "small town feel" with a cute downtown and residents who can walk there. The spot we chose specifically is not 'big box'...it's charming; a must for the image we wanted to create. Added to that are the new businesses that are coming into Waterdown (the new retail at the corner of Dundas/Main and next to our building on Main), thereby generating more pedestrian traffic. As well as the very large residential developments all along Dundas St and on Parkside. Finally, Waterdown is nicely situated within an easy drive of Burlington, Dundas, Ancaster, Carlisle, and Flamborough.
Couldn't agree more Jessica. As for me and my girls, our favourite Atomic Cupcakes were for me a the Peanut Butter Cupcake and for my girls who are chocolate lovers the Chocolate on Top was the only choice for them. While most cupcake shops including Atomic, serve both regular and mini sized cupcakes, I always prefer the mini cupcake. That way you can have two different flavours and the cupcake to icing ratio is in better proportion for the ideal cupcake experience. (Do I sound like "Cupcake Connoisseur"??). What sets Atomic Cupcakes apart from other cupcake shops?? Candy!!! Jessica lovingly tops each cupcake with something to go with the flavour. A Peppermint Patty, Peanut Butter Cup, Gummy Worms, Smarties, Gumdrops or Peanuts top the sweet treats.
I wish you many great years serving Waterdown Jessica. For more information on location, hours, flavours and special cupcake themed items for sale in the shop please visit their website www.atomiccupcakes.ca

Best Beach
A couple of summers ago, we began going down to the Burlington Bay beach... which is just down from Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington (Maple and Lakeshore area). This wonderful little beach is just 15-20 minutes aways from Waterdown, and is a great FREE way to spend the day with the family in the summer or just strolling along the paths any other time of the year.
Closer to home, there are also many "watering holes" that locals love to go to for a day at the beach. A great list of all the local parks and recreation can be found at:
http://www.conservationhamilton.ca/conservation-areas/conservation-areas/welcome-to-the-hamilton-conservation-areas
Our family has enjoyed time down at Christie Conservation and Confederation Park. Another great place (alhough I have not personally been there but I keep hearing really good things about) is Valens Conservation. Great beach, great swimming and a day of fun for the whole family. You can even fish there! Hopefully we will find some time to go there next week, or it'll probably have to wait until next summer. Also offered at Valen's is camping, where they have both serviced and unserviced campsites.
So many great places to go to in this area and you can get a HCA (Hamilton Conservation Authority) Membership Pass to enjoy all parks managed by the Hamilton Conservation Authority... this includes Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton (just outside of Waterdown). For just $95, driver and carload of passengers (up to 7 maximum) can enjoy unlimited admission to all parks for 1 year from the date of purchase... a VERY good deal!

Best Overall Family Physical Exercise
When we moved here in 2002, the Waterdown/Flamborough YMCA was a fairly new building. Built in 2001, the facility has already gone through one major renovation last year and is well kept all year long with regular painting and maintenance throughout the facility inside and out.
There are activities for everyone there, from newborn to senior citizen. There is swimming lessons, recreational swimming, aquafit classes (and other aqua classes geared towards seniors), a fantastic gym facility upstairs with the greatest motorized equipment and strength training available, fitness classes for every level, social programming for toddler to teen, daycare facilities and daycamp facilities for the summer.
I am grateful for the YMCA every summer for their Y Kids programming every Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday which help keep my kids from summertime boredom.
The rates are fairly reasonable and if you take full advantage of all they offer, you more than get your money's worth. For families that might have difficulty paying for their fees, they also have a charitable program called Strong Kids which provides assistance to families so that their children can take part in all activities available at the facility.

Best Cycling
Back when I was a kid, I loved to ride my bike everywhere. With a bike, it seemed you could go anywhere! Now that I have kids of my own, we have been enjoying the family bike ride.
A couple of years ago we were told about the gravel path that runs north of highway 5 (aka Dundas Street) from Riley Street all the way out to past Highway 6... in fact you cycle right under Highway 6. It is a short run, but for a family with kids it is the perfect length to spend 45 minutes to an hour cycling.
Our local Waterdown bike shop Bicycle Works is a great resource if you are a serious or casual biker. You can buy top of the line bikes from knowledgeable staff or take your bike in for tune up/repair. They also organize Group Bike Rides weekly for beginning, intermediate and advanced riders.

Even organizers of the Ride to Conquer Cancer have Waterdown as part of one of the routes you can choose to take... for more information on the 2012 ride please visit... http://to12.conquercancer.ca
As a mom of two girls that seem to grow faster than I can keep up with, I discovered a great little place to get used bikes. Big Red's on Parkside Drive, just west of Parkside Farms (almost at Evan's Road) has lots of choice when it comes to getting a good used bike. For $35 each, we have now purchased two bikes from Big Red, and we even traded in our old bike. He usually has an assortment at the end of his driveway leaning up against the fence. Some days there are lots to choose from, other days not so much. The later in the day, there seems to be more, as Red works on new bikes that come in and he puts them out as they are done. Red works out of his home garage and often has bikes, lawnmowers and snow blowers all over the yard waiting to be worked on. We have been very happy with our purchases there and will continue to buy our bikes there for our growing girls!!
Biking is a great activity for families to be involved in together, get some good exercise and see parts of the community you don't normally notice as you quickly drive around town.

Best Animal Encounter
The the Flamborough countryside has a fantastic destination that attracts people from all over... and it's right in our backyard. African Lion Safari is a great way for you to spend the day and an awesome way to get up close to wild animals from the safety of your car or the Safari transportation.
I grew up in the Hamilton area, and as a kid we had heard of and seen commercials for African Lion Safari... but it wasn't until last year when we took our kids that I actually had my first visit. It was a beautiful warm August day and I have to say that I became a kid again and thoroughly enjoyed all that the safari had to offer.
We started our day off with the safari tour of the animal habitats. We chose to drive in our car instead of the park transportation... one because of the wait to get on the park transportation and we also thought that it would feel more personal to choose what areas we wanted to spend more/less time in and experiencing the monkey exhibit, having them sitting on the hood or your roof is an animal encounter not to be missed!! I could have spent all day there with the joy of having the monkeys crawling all over our car. But, I think I enjoyed seeing them on the cars in front, behind and beside us even more as it gave us a better view.

Our favourite areas of the safari park were the lions, monkeys, giraffes, ostrich, rhinos and buffalo. After we enjoyed our "safari time", we took our kids to the amusement part of the park. There is a waterpark area (more like a splash pad & small water slides) which my girls enjoyed, but at 7 and 9 yrs old, they felt like they might be a little old for this area.
Then we headed over to the rides and shows. Great little rides (highly recommend the wait and extra cost of the elephant ride) and we loved the shows... the bird shows were good and we just loved the elephant show. We also loved the petting zoo area with the baby goats and deer. One of the best parts of the park that we enjoyed so much was at the end of the day, they walk most of the elephants to the big pond and the elephants have some fun playing in the water. It is a real, honest and insightful look into the personality of the elephants.
We love the African Lion Safari, it is a short drive from Waterdown, Burlington and Hamilton... a great way to spend the day with "wild" animals!!

Best People
We've just spent the last two days enjoying the OH Canada Ribfest in Memorial Park Waterdown. I am just overflowing with pride in my town and country at this moment.
When we were looking to buy our first house in 2002, I felt a pull to look in Waterdown. From the time we moved here, I was impressed at the feel of this small bedroom community nestled between commuter cities of Burlington and Hamilton. The friendliness of everyone from the local grocery store, schools, churches, YMCA, neighbours and local businesses is so different for me. Having lived in big cities like Hamilton and Toronto, you tend to feel anonymous... you go somewhere and you don't know or recognize anyone.
Not in Waterdown! Spend about a year here, get involved in the community and you will never shop at the grocery store and not run into someone you know.
Going to Ribfest totally re-inforced that fact to me. The countless volunteers who have given their time to plan and staff the 4 day event is mind boggling. The girl clearing tables tonight of all the garbage with a smile on her face, the friendliness of the people working the VERY busy alcohol tent, the support of local retailers taking out boothes to chat with everyone about the great services offered around Waterdown, and the pride I felt today watching so many turn up to watch new Canadians being sworn in... moving. My own kids spent time volunteering to entertain rib-goers today... dancing on stage with their dance studio... many other studios will also be performing over the 4 days.
I also thank the organizers of the Ribfest for not only putting on a fantastic and packed event, but for finally bringing fireworks back to Waterdown after a 10 year absense. It meant so much to me to be able to bring my family to the park to watch the fireworks tonight... I could have cried I was so proud. There are still 2 more days to get out to Waterdown, enjoy ribfest and meet some great people.
I love this town... great people, great local business, and great small town feel. Don't ever change!

Best Summer Freebie
My kids are counting down the days til the end of school. While I enjoy spending time with them during the summer, they seem to think I am "Julie, your Cruise Director" (am I dating myself with the Love Boat reference??!!). Each day they seem to wake up and say, "so what are we doing today Mom?", As a mom who is trying to balance working at home and figuring out what to do with the kids everyday, I struggle to come up with what to do with my kids during the summer.
Okay, so most days they will be playing in the backyard (or some other organized program) while I'm trying to work or if I need to be out during the day I rely upon the kind assistance of my mom (aka Granny). Sometimes work can get so busy, that each week I try to dedicate an hour or two to spend quality time with my girls. Last week I came across a great freebie from one of my Facebook friends sharing a link.
Waterdown Lanes is offering a coupon for your kids to bowl for free if you register them on-line. So for just the cost of shoe rentals and my adult price, we can have a great activity to do together once a week. Here's the link www.kidsbowlfree.com/waterdown or check out Waterdown Lanes on Facebook or visit their website www.waterdownlanes.com ...where you can click on the link for Kids Bowl Free.
Best Country Surprise
We've been going to the Dutch Mill Country Market for years. We found the market on one of our Sunday drives not long after we moved here 9 years ago. Located at 533 Millgrove Side Road, it is just a 2 minute drive from Clappison's Corners. The Dutch Mill has had a few changes over the years, and ownership did change hands a few years ago, but all the things we love about the Dutch Mill remain.
Outside: Our kids love going there in the summer to see all the animals wandering around on the property... ponies, roosters, goats, llamas, bunnies, ducks, geese and swans. The property is beautiful with a bridge and path over and around the pond you can walk around to see all the animals and fully enjoy the property.
In the summer you can also buy lots of local grown fresh produce and nursery stock in the garden centre (hanging baskets, urns, window boxes, flats of annuals and some perennials... you might also find some bushes and trees). These are all sold on the front porch and around the side in the open air greenhouse. On the porch, you'll also find a great collection of Amish made muskoka chairs, tables and benches made out of resin.. you NEVER need to sand or stain the chairs again!!!
They are also hosting celebrations on Friday July 1st with lots of great family activities and a Classic Car show on Saturday July 30th. Make sure you visit this great spot, and check out their website:

Inside: You can spend a good hour wandering around on the two levels of the Dutch Mill. Downstairs on the main level, lots of different kinds of merchandise... clothing (including a section dedicated to the red hat society!) toys, toiletries, candles, bird baths, garden decor, special occasion gifts, dutch/german food items, seasonal decor and ready made food from the freezers. You can also have a bite to eat in the tea room, or get some ice cream. In the very back, is a fair sized banquet room with a stage which they apparently rent out... in the past they would host 50's and 60's dances but I don't think there are currently any scheduled. Then you can head upstairs where you can find lots of great home decor including quilts, paintings, and charming "country style" items. They are also hosting celebrations on Friday July 1st with lots of great family activities and a Classic Car show on Saturday July 30th. Best little shops - one is going out of business!
One of the things I love about Waterdown, is the many unique shops around town that you can buy interesting one of a kind items. Many of these shops I have already written about.
Driving down Hamilton street today, I was so saddened to see the big sign at "Sobey's Plaza" (can't recall the official name of the plaza at the moment)... on it I read "Closing Sale on now at the Willow Tree... Thanks for the 22 years".
How can that be? The Willow Tree is often the reason so many people come to Waterdown to shop. I have bought many things there over the years. They have great decor items, pretty smelling lotions/sprays/candles, unique giftware, high end seasonal items and housewares. I am truly saddened to lose such a great store. Times have been tough for retailers in town. Three factors have greatly impacted smaller retailers in town...big stores like Zellers, Walmart, Canadian Tire & Rona may have taken some business away, parking meters in the core streets in town (Mill, Main & Dundas between Mill and Hamilton) have somewhat deterred shoppers from the core, and then there's the downturn of the economy since the latest recession began. The Willow Tree used to occupy three storefronts in the plaza, but condensed down to two spaces a couple of years ago (I think sometime in 2009). I figured it was due to the recession, but was so glad to see that the quality of the merchandise and the helpfulness of the staff didn't diminish with the smaller space.
For the last few Christmas seasons, I have helped organize the Drummond House Christmas Home Tour (usually held the 3rd Saturday in November). Each year, I was always excited to see what lovely treasures would be donated to Drummond House from the kind and generous owners at the Willow Tree. Beautiful, high end Christmas treasures would be donated every year from collections that didn't sell during the Christmas Season or Boxing Week specials. We were always truly grateful for the blessings bestowed upon Drummond House by the Willow Tree each year.
I have always made it a priority to shop local. So many great shops to explore and find unique treasures around town. Here's a list of some of the one of a kind shopping and excellent customer service you can find around town:
The Willow Tree (closing sale on now), Kitchen Impressions, The Busy Bee, Lareina's, Pot o Gold, Goodness Me, Weeks Home Hardware (sure it's part of the Home Hardware chain but I will always choose them first over the big box stores for the small town customer service they provide there), Tea at the Whitehouse (I never knew there were so many tea accessories and products), Second Time Around, Jitterbug Cafe (neat coffee items & local artisan work for sale in the shop), Leylands British Foods, Bicycle Works, Circle of Light Wellness Centre and Wishes and Fine Jewellery. I'm sure I'm probably forgetting some other great little shops... don't let my list limit you... go out and find them.
Did you also know that Waterdown is a destination for bridal shops?? Eager brides love shopping Waterdown for the three shops all within walking distance of each other. The Coach House Bridal Salon, Michelle My Belle Bridal and Angie's Bridal Boutique have great dresses which are sure to please any bride. Brides travelling to Waterdown will also come across a sign on Dundas Street where a dressmaker works out of her home... Lisa VanHattem Custom Wedding Gowns is located at 344 Dundas Street East.
For such a small town, Waterdown is also quite a destination for hairdressers, spas and dance studios. There are so many choices in all three areas. You will never want for any of these in Waterdown.
I encourage everyone if you don't already, make it a point to support small business in Waterdown. The Waterdown Business Improvement Area and the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce will thank you, and make this town better for it!
Thank you, The Willow Tree for your 22 years of great service and merchandise. This shopaholic will certainly miss you.

Best Park
I don't know about you, but I am LOVING all this fabulous warm weather this week. Besides spending time in my garden, I love to take advantage the wonderful space we have here in Waterdown, at Memorial Park.
Year round, anytime the temperature is above zero... you will find dozens of teenagers hanging out at the skateboard park. In the winter-time, you will find lots of families and kids taking advantage of the little hill which is great for tobagganing. (please note...this year the City of Hamilton banned tobagganing at City parks due to the unfortunate amount of claims from people hurting themselves). My personal favourite time of year is spring/summer/fall at Memorial Park.
It's always a fun surprise to see on a Monday or Tuesday, the fair roll into town and start setting up in the park... the town starts buzzing and kids can't contain their excitement. "When can we go to the fair?" is all I hear in my house!! There seems to be about 3 or 4 fairs that come to town between Spring - Fall.
When my kids were young, they loved the swings, slides and especially the splash pad at the park in the summertime. The other bonus of our park is that the City of Hamilton has employed "Supies" in the summertime for kids to enjoy. Incase you've never heard of a "Supie" they are playground supervisors that do arts and crafts with the kids during the day.
The Pavillion is another great part of the park... many groups gather there formally or informally to use the Pavillion. Last year I'd drive by on various nights to see a bootcamp class working hard.... rain or shine and I believe it was used right up til October.
In the summer, it's not uncommon to see the baseball diamonds being used. It's fun to see baseball, softball and t-ball games happening during baseball season. A great free family activity! You can catch kids and adult games happening each week.
Our family was away last year for Canada Day so we missed the Inaugural Waterdown Ribfest, so we made sure we'll be home for it this year. This is easily turning into THE event around Waterdown, and is going to bring lots of family fun, breaking of a world record, entertainment, a small midway, a movie night on June 30th, fireworks on Canada Day and of course RIBS! I think we'll be spending at least 2 Days at Memorial Park that weekend! For more information on the event which goes from June 30th to July 3rd check out www.ohcanadaribfest.ca
Another wonderful thing that used to happen at the Park many years ago was the Waterdown Farmer's Market. We have a great multitude of fantastic farms around us in this very rich area of Flamborough. If I recall correctly, there was some talk awhile back that citizen's would love to see the Farmer's Market revived again. I love to support local business, always have. I think that a Farmer's Market would be a great idea to seasonally sell produce, meats and various local product.... Anyone else think it's a great idea???

Best Anticipated Store Opening
Since I heard last year that our local Zellers might become a Target, I hoped that it would be sooner rather than later. Today I read that the Waterdown Zellers, located in the Flamborough Power Centre, will become one of the the first Target Stores for this area. Expected opening will happen sometime in the Spring of 2013.

It's funny how my reasons for running down to the US to shop are slowly starting to creep north. Take a look at Mapleview (located only 10-15 minutes away from Waterdown). In the last year since undergoing their big renovation, we've seen major US stores take up residence there like: Coach, Justice, Aeropostale, Kiehl's, Sephora and Pink by Victoria's Secret. Most of those stores (except for Justice, my 10 year old daughter's personal favourite) have been in Toronto for awhile now, but it's so fantastic to have them so very close to Waterdown. Considering the cost of gas these days, I really like that the US stores I love are coming closer to me, and saving me the drive across the border.

Best Highway Access
I've had to zip over to the south east side of Burlington alot lately.... each time I get on the fairly new "on ramp" and "off ramp" (been open since about October 2010) located at Waterdown Road and the 403, I can't help it... I'm so happy.
It's a little thing, but it means so much to be able to drive straight down Waterdown Road and get right onto the highway. We've lived in Waterdown for 8 years and whenever we need to head east, we would drive down Waterdown Road and either have to drive beside the highway on the North Service Road until we could get on at Brant Street, or sit through traffic and lights on Dundas Street.
In the next couple of years, they will continue work on Waterdown Road, widening it to accomodate the increase in traffic and possibly it will hook up with the new East-West Corridor. The "EWC" is such a hot issue in Waterdown, many people do not want this highway, but considering the growth happening around here, it is going to be needed.
Many people might not consider a highway exit a great feature of living in a town, but when it shaves off time, valuable time from our busy lives, it is a VERY good thing, and a Best thing about Waterdown.

Best Place to find British Goods
There are so many unique shops in Waterdown that have become a great reason for people to shop in Waterdown... Leylands is one of them. With the "wedding of the century" coming up next Friday April 29th, I thought this would be a great time to introduce you to Leylands in case you've never made the trip into town to check out this little jem of a store. Leylands is offering "Tax Free Day" on the day of the Royal Wedding and also offering free Empire Cookies. They also have a good supply of Royal Wedding memorabilia including mugs, plates, cup & saucers and teapots!
from their website.... "Leylands was established in 2002 and is named after the British Leylands Company in England. Bought out in 2005, Leylands has gone from strength to strength, offering exceptional variety of items with new stock arriving every second week. Our customers continue to ask us to bring in items they miss from Britain: if it's possible, we do. We now stock over 500 items making us, if not the best, then one of the best stocked British stores in Ontario. Run by Karen Thorpe and Sheryl Wellings, two sisters born in Birmingham and raised in the West Midlands, Leylands has that great "corner shop" feeling where customers feel able to pause and chat. Excellent customer incentive programs and products such as fresh pies, custard tarts and a variety of other baked products make Leylands a staple in our customers lives. Running through the summer we offer flake "99" ice creams - just like the ones you used to get from the ice cream vans back home"
Leylands is located at 318 Dundas Street East (just west of the historic 4 corners at Dundas & Mill Street on the south side (beside the American). Phone 905-690-9539. leylands@bellnet.ca
I'm heading over there soon to pick up my Royal Wedding stuff before they run out!
