A couple of summers ago, we began going down to the Burlington Bay beach... which is just down from Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington (Maple and Lakeshore area). This wonderful little beach is just 15-20 minutes aways from Waterdown, and is a great FREE way to spend the day with the family in the summer or just strolling along the paths any other time of the year.
Closer to home, there are also many "watering holes" that locals love to go to for a day at the beach. A great list of all the local parks and recreation can be found at:

Our family has enjoyed time down at Christie Conservation and Confederation Park. Another great place (alhough I have not personally been there but I keep hearing really good things about) is Valens Conservation. Great beach, great swimming and a day of fun for the whole family. You can even fish there! Hopefully we will find some time to go there next week, or it'll probably have to wait until next summer. Also offered at Valen's is camping, where they have both serviced and unserviced campsites.
So many great places to go to in this area and you can get a HCA (Hamilton Conservation Authority) Membership Pass to enjoy all parks managed by the Hamilton Conservation Authority... this includes Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton (just outside of Waterdown). For just $95, driver and carload of passengers (up to 7 maximum) can enjoy unlimited admission to all parks for 1 year from the date of purchase... a VERY good deal!
