Best Holiday Lights

It's the most wonderful time of the year!    The days leading up to Christmas are my favourite... I love watching Christmas movies/tv specials, I love Christmas Baking, holiday get-togethers and I still get such a thrill driving around town and seeing houses decorated with Christmas Lights, Inflatables, Nativity Scenes and 3D objects.

I also love seeing the Christmas Lights in Burlington.    Down at the waterfront at Spencer Smith Park, the City of Burlington has been putting on the Lakeside Festival of Lights for 18 years.    This year, the festival runs from November 29th to January 7th from dusk til dawn.     Sponsorship support of community businesses, organizations and the City cover the costs associated with running and maintaining the festival.    They also have a dedicated group of volunteers to make sure that the displays are setup, maintained and safely dismantled each and every year.      I found this old video from a couple of years ago on You Tube showing highlights of the display.

As an added bonus, the City of Burlington is offering free parking downtown at all municipal lots and meters.

Not far from the lights down by the lake, you can drive a short distance to 3360 Spruce Ave in Burlington (Walkers Line area between New & Lakeshore) to see a fantastic residential display of lights that I'm sure Chris Hadfield could have seen from space!     Homeowner Doug Musson has been decorating his home with tons of lights for over 30 years, but the last 15 years have been in honour of the memory of son Cam who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1998.     It has become a tradition in Burlington for many families, and it has become so popular that you will often show up and find people there from out of town.    

For many years Doug covered the cost of hydro himself, just happy to provide local kids with some of the magic of Christmas.     Due to the escalating costs of hydro, Doug realized that he just couldn't afford to keep doing on his own and started placing a tin outside for anyone who would like to help them out with hydro costs during the month of December.

Doug turns on the lights December 1st every year between 5-11pm, and keeps them going every day until the first weekend after New Years's.  

I love to hear stories about what people do as an act of kindness for those in the community, and I thank you Doug for the joy you bring to kids (young and old) by your wonderful display year after year.

Best Chili Fest

Fall arrives on Sunday September 22nd, and with the arrival of Fall we start to think about leaves changing, apple picking, visiting a pumpkin patch and the thought of a warm bowl of Chili warming you up from the inside out on a cool night.

Make your dinner plans for Tuesday September 24th to attend the Inaugural Chili Fest taking place at the Waterdown Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion at 79 Hamilton Street North from 4pm to 8pm.    Local restaurants are going to be stirring up approximately 150 Gallons of Chili for a Chili Fest in support of our local Flamborough Women's Resource Centre (FWRC).  Organizers are hoping for a sold out event of food, fun and music raising at least $10 000 for the Resource Centre.   FWRC is a program of Interval House that offers support services for women in the community such as counselling, legal advocacy, transitional support for abuse, employment counselling and peer support.

Some of the restaurants involved include The Royal Coachman, Goodness Me, Jitterbug Café & Catering, Dutch Mill Country Market, The Watermark Taphouse & Grille, Roseto Catering, Crepe-A-Licious, Bo's Sports Bar, Mill Street & 5 American House, Angel's Diner, Pita Pit, Brown Dog Coffee Shop, Boston Pizza and Flamborough Downs.    The event is modeled after the ultra popular Soup Fest in Hamilton which benefits Living Rock Youth Ministries.

Tickets are $10 (4 half cup servings) for Adults and $5 (2 half cup servings) for children if purchased in advance.   Tickets will be $12 at the door.     Tickets are available to purchase from the Flamborough Women's Resource Centre, CT&G Automotive Specialists, Weeks Home Hardware and Hello Gorgeous! Hair Salon.

In addition to the chili & bread station, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be sold.    Proceeds from refreshments will go to the Legion who has donated the use of the upstairs hall for the event.

Funds from Chili Fest will enable the centre to expand it's programs to further assist clients in need and respond to increased demand in the community.    Last year, the centre provided individual counselling to 77 clients which translates to approximately 570 counselling hours; it saw 112 drop in clients and offered assistance to 45 women who were at risk of losing housing.    The centre and it's staff were successful in helping 10 women find permanent accommodations.

Forget cooking on Tuesday night... head out to Chili Fest!  

Best Animal Adoptions

Have you heard the saying, you are either a "Cat Person" or a "Dog Person"???   Neither one is the correct answer, but a personal preference.     Where do I fall on that debate.... I'd rather say "yep, one of those" and keep it a mystery.   :-D

Locally, the best place to adopt a wonderful little furry baby into your family would be the loving "no kill" not for profit shelter of Animal Adoptions of Flamborough located at 16 Mill Street North in Waterdown.  

Shelters typically see the adoption rate slump during the summer due to many people going away on vacation or up to the cottage.     Currently, Animal Adoptions of Flamborough (AFF) are receiving phone calls on daily basis from people looking to surrender a cat or kittens.    Unfortunately, there is no space available and they are over capacity so the staff are just not able to accept any new cats.    

AAF's President, Mary Lamb, is calling upon residents to open their homes and hearts to adopting or to consider fostering cats at this time.    The alternative is a grim one.    With AAF unable to accept any new cats into the shelter, they may have to go elsewhere which may lead to them being euthanized or they will just be dumped at the side of the road.      Irresponsible owners constantly abandon cats in the Flamborough countryside on many of the sideroads which is a real problem.

While the AAF has a real urgent need for adopting or fostering families, they are also in need of financial donations.    The shelter is currently caring for 130 cats and dogs which is a costly expense for this not for profit organization.       All animals they care for are vet checked, received their first round of vaccinations and have been micro-chipped.     If they are old enough, they have also been spayed or neutered.

Animal Adoptions are having a fundraiser Garage Sale and BBQ at the shelter next weekend at their Mill Street location.    Please stop by and show your support by purchasing an item, eat at the BBQ, make a donation or talk to staff about adopting or fostering (expenses of fostering are paid by the shelter I believe).

Best things to do for Canada Day

No more teachers no more books..., well you know the rest.    I've been out of school for more than 20 years, but end of the school year still seems to be the official start of summer for me.

Lots going on in and around Waterdown if you decided to stay in town instead of heading into cottage country.

In Waterdown, "THE" event of the summer is taking place at Memorial Park... I believe it's the 4th Annual "Oh Canada Ribfest".      Lots of great food like bbq ribs/chicken/pulled pork, colossal onions, donuts, lemonade, ice cream etc...  Also lots of local businesses, vendors and artisans have booths selling their services or products.    Then, there is the stage for entertainment (you can watch ME dancing with my Adult Hip Hop group dancing with Live Dream Dance on Saturday at 11am, and then a big attraction on Sunday night is local rising star Jaclyn Kenyon) and of course all the midway/games.     Monday, special Canada Day activities are planned like the swearing in of new Canadians (130pm Main Stage) and then everything finishes off Monday night at 10pm with FIREWORKS!!!

Best Waterfront

Waterdown is (to me) so centrally located.     We are accessible to so many areas.     In 10 minutes we can be in downtown Hamilton or 20 minutes to downtown Burlington.    

In Burlington, there is such a pretty Waterfront... it is a vibrant area which attracts people all day, every day of the year.      Yesterday, the long awaited Burlington Pier opened with the start of the Sound of Music Festival.... and an official community celebration is taking place tomorrow.

"The City of Burlington will celebrate the opening of the Brant Street Pier on Saturday, June 15 as part of Burlington’s Sound of Music Festival, one of Ontario’s top festivals.
The pier’s opening will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at Spencer Smith Park, following the Sound of Music parade.

“The Brant Street Pier is nearly completed, and will be a waterfront icon at the foot of Brant Street for families to enjoy for generations to come,” said Mayor Rick Goldring. “There is still some outstanding business regarding legal action related to the pier. The city will be as open as possible in sharing that information.”

The Brant Street Pier is part of the overall development of the Waterfront at Downtown Burlington that includes Rotary Pond and Discovery Landing.

The Burlington Teen Tour Band will lead City Council, members of the community and federal and provincial politicians onto the pier to enjoy its waterfront view as well as some free refreshments and live entertainment. Part of the pier will close at 3 p.m. to allow Sound of Music organizers to get ready for evening fireworks.
The seven Burlington children who left their handprints on a commemorative plaque on the pier will also be asked to join the official opening. They will attend a plaque unveiling at the pier with the city’s funding partners on Friday, June 14 at 1 p.m.
“People will be thrilled when they see the astounding view of Lake Ontario and Burlington’s skyline from the Brant Street Pier,” said City Manager Jeff Fielding. “The completed Brant Street Pier is one more feature in this city that makes Burlington truly special, and one of Canada’s best cities.” 
The pier has been the product of years of challenges that include the uniqueness of constructing in and around water. The city worked with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Ministry of Natural Resources and Conservation Halton to ensure protection of both waterfront and land, especially the aquatic habitat.
“This has been a challenging but rewarding project for city staff,” said Scott Stewart, General Manager of Development and Infrastructure. “I would like to give my sincere thanks to the construction team that has helped get the Brant Street Pier where it is today—ready for opening in June of 2013.”  
The Brant Street Pier construction team includes Graham Infrastructure, Morrison Hershfield and project manager METTKO.
The total cost of the Brant Street Pier construction is $14.4 million. The Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program is funding $4.4 million of this amount while Halton Region is providing $2.5 million.
“In Burlington, we do great things together,” said Mayor Goldring. “The Brant Street Pier is an example of a government partnership that will attract tourists, create another anchor in the downtown, and stand out as an example of the creative vision this city has for a continuously high quality of life for residents.” 
About the Brant Street Pier
The Brant Street Pier is being built to a high design standard with a minimum 75-year operational life.
The unique S-shaped pier will be a signature destination and attraction at The Waterfront at Downtown Burlington. The pier extends 132 metres (about 430 feet) from Spencer Smith Park over Lake Ontario, providing unique views of the lake and Burlington's shoreline. The pier deck is elevated above the surface of the water with the lookout node another nearly four metres (about 13 feet) above the main deck.

Best Waterdown Health Festival

I've been on a quest lately after being diagnosed as Gluten, Dairy & Egg Intolerant.    There are other ones for me but those are the major ones for me to avoid.     There has been so much to learn and shopping/eating has become a new way of life for me.                             I have learned a lot from my Naturopath, Dr. Carly Wendler and I have learned a lot from the great staff at Goodness Me in Waterdown.    They have been fantastic with lots of food samples, advice from staff and they always have classes every week to help educate and promote good health in various forms.                                    Tomorrow, May 25th they are have a Health Festival at their Waterdown location.  You can sign-up for free classes, try out some new products, score some great deals and win prizes! Best Gluten Free Frozen Yogurt

Every few years, a certain type of shop will become popular... Tea, Coffee, Donut, Cupcake, Ice Cream with Mix-Ins... they've all had their time of popularity.     The trend of the moment seems to be the Yogurt Shop where you can mix the flavours, and add in pretty much as much toppings as you want.      You walk in choose a cup (the only size is large!) and you have your choice to serve yourself what kind of flavour(s) you want.     Some might go for just one flavour, or swirl two together... or maybe pick two flavours and put them in the same bowl yourself.    

Then you get to go to the topping area and put anything your heart desires on top.    Then you go to the cashier and they weigh your purchase and you are charged by the weight (and of course you can't put anything back in case you've rung up a $13 cup!!!)

For me, I am crazy about a new place in Burlington called CC Swirls www.ccswirls.com  located at 2201 Brant Street (in the plaza between Dollarama and Freshco).      What I love about this shop is EVERYTHING is Gluten Free!!!!    They have the cups that you can fill up with your favourite frozen yogurt and topping (note... they do have some toppings that would have gluten in them) or they have a freezer with pre-packed frozen yogurt,  frozen yogurt bars and frozen cakes.     I also need to be dairy free so for those of us with Gluten Free/Dairy Free needs, they also offer one flavour of Sorbet.

There are many great shops locally in the area Yogurty's is a great place right in the heart of the core in Waterdown @ 312 Dundas St E (and a favourite place of my daughters!).      They've just started to offer a Gluten Free & Dairy free flavour(s) there as well.      http://www.yogurtys.com/

Our family has also tried Menchies which is located at 1900 Appleby Line in Burlington.   They have many Gluten Free options, and just one Gluten Free/Dairy Free sorbet flavour as well.    www.menchies.com

I'm so glad to have found these shops (especially with summer right around the corner) and that they offer something for those of us with dietary restrictions.

Best Prom Dress

There are lots of great places around to get beautiful dresses... locally you might like to try Angie's Bridal on Mill Street South, or you might be able to find a dress at either of the other two bridal shops in town like the Coach House or Michelle My Belle both on Dundas Street.

Last year, I learned of a company in Burlington, Brash Avenues (a marketing company) that was taking donations of used/donated prom dresses, tuxedos and suits for teens looking to go to prom.     Proms have gotten out of control with  expensive dresses, hair, hair pieces, makeup, limos, etc... To go to prom can be so expensive that some kids don't go just because it is an expense they or their family can't afford.

What a great service to provide!     And what a great way to pass on your teens prom dress from last year that that they aren't going to wear again or if you are a fella... and you have a suit that you are looking to get rid of... certainly a young guy would appreciate a suit to wear to prom (and possibly again and again).

 

 

 

Best Local Hockey

Waterdown is such a great town for local sport.     There is great choice when it comes to Dance Studios, Karate, Soccer, Ice Skating and of course Hockey!

This weekend the Flamborough Minor Peewee AE Sabres are set to finish their best season in years!     At the end of the regular season, the Sabres have acheived a record 23 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties which is the best finish the Flamborough Hockey Association has marked in recent memory.

TOMORROW... SATURDAY MARCH 23rd @ 3pm at the brand new North Wentworth Arena, the boys are hoping to bring home the GOLD in the OMHA (Ontario Minor Hockey Association) Championship.      

The team is hoping that the community will come out and support their team by filling the arena with lots of cheering fans wearing Blue and Gold (team colours) and making lots of noise for the boys with horns, bells, whistles and chants of support!

How awesome is it for them to have home ice advantage on one of the best seasons they've had in years.... Come on Flamborough.... come out and support the boys this Saturday!

Best Gluten Free Bakeries

Since having the diagnosis of Food Intolerance (Gluten, Casein & Egg mostly) I have been on a quest to find some of the great desserts, cookies and baked goods that I know I am going to miss and need a great healthy replacement for me.   

The first place I tried out was Kelly's Bake Shoppe on Brant Street in Burlington.     I was most interested to go there since they are the ONLY place I have found that are ALL Gluten Free and Vegan (no animal products like eggs and milk).       I tried a great sample of their products... a few cupcakes (all great), the Mile High Brownie (FANTASTIC) and bought a bag of their Gluten Free Croutons (excellent on my gluten free vegan Ceasar Salad I made at home).    Can't wait to go back and try more!



The second place I tried out was You'd Never Know Bakery in Dundas.    Super friendly staff that was excellent about coaching me through some of my options.   The President and Owner Rhonda Barr was there working away and even came over to chat with me.    She helped me pick out some great options and even helped me with advice on buying Gluten Free and dining out.     At Ya'd Never Know, I ended up not purchasing sweets but went more for freezer meals, All Purpose Gluten Free Flour, Pizza Crusts, Hamburger Buns and the MOST incredible prepared chicken breast I've ever had.     I've been on such a bland diet for months now that this amazing marinade had so much flavour it was a little taste of heaven for me.      I hope they have it when I go back, Rhonda had said it was a seasonal option.    It was truly amazing.    There was so much selection there.    Ready made salads, ready made meals, bulk grains like Quinoa Flakes, baked goods, soups and meals for the freezer.    So far I have really enjoyed everything I bought from there.   Rhonda even informed me of the Canadian Governments tax rebate for those with a diagnosis of Celiac or Gluten Intolerance.     I am going to be a regular there for sure.

 In Waterdown, the new bakery Beyond the Batter does have a daily gluten free feature and sometimes will have a vegan option as a Baker's Choice.     Each day of the week they offer a different flavour for Gluten Free.    My favourite is Midnight Craving and they offer the Gluten Free option on Tuesdays and Saturdays.  To see a list of the cupcake selections please visit their website   http://www.beyondthebatter.com/Daily-Cupcakes.html        While Beyond the Batter does offer Gluten Free and Vegan options,  they do say on their website "If you are allergic to these ingredients we do not recommend that you consume our products. We do our best to ensure that our Gluten Free and Vegan do not come into contact with any of these allergens, however do not guarantee it."

Also offering Gluten Free cupcakes is Cupids Cupcakes located in the Longo's Plaza at Walker's Line & Dundas.     While offering Gluten Free cupcakes, they do not offer Vegan at all.     Their literature states that they bake Gluten Free on special order and you need to order either a dozen mini's or a half dozen full sized.     I went in one day and asked about what they had Gluten Free and they did have two vanilla and 10 chocolate mini cupcakes in the freezer that they could sell me.     I have frequently bought cupcakes there for the last couple of years and could not tell the difference between their Gluten Free and the regular cupcakes.     When placing the order, you can get any of the icing flavours normally being offered on their daily schedule.   They do require 48 hours notice before pick up to have your GFree cupcakes ready.

More places are offering Gluten Free options so thankfully it is getting easier to find substitutes when trying to stick to a Gluten Free or Vegan diet.

Best TARGET Store Waterdown!

See ya Buffalo.... the main reason for me shopping across the border is just about to open a store in my community of Waterdown.... I am a Target lover!!   (or should I say Tar-jeigh, in a french accent)       I am a local girl at heart and love to shop at the wonderful small businesses here in town... but I must admit that I have been anxiously awaiting this new Target store opening for about 2 years since they announced that Target was buying our local Zellers.

My sister lives in Guelph, so seeing that Guelph, Fergus and Milton Target stores had their soft launch opening last week (to work out any bugs in their systems before opening in larger markets), my sister and I headed to Target last Saturday.      Shopping on a Saturday is usually busy, but the first Saturday that a Target store is open in Canada was crazy busy!      

Kudos to the staff in Guelph.     They were great at rounding up buggies and making sure that they were available for anyone walking through the doors.      I saw several staff in each department and the huge lineup that went from the cash registers to almost the other end of the store in the food department moved very quickly.     It was a massive line and we considered putting everything back and heading home but I was determined to make it home with my finds.

One thing I was concerned about was that the quality, selection & price of merchandise was going to be different in Canada as compared to the US.     I am so disappointed each time I go into a Walmart store in the states and every time leaving say to myself..."The stuff here is so much nicer than at home!"

After my 1st experience shopping at Target last weekend... I am THRILLED!      From what I saw, they had alot of the same merchandise you'd find in the US!     I bought my daughter some bedding from Target in the US last year and found the same bedding at the Guelph store!     The clothes.... OMG the clothes were fantastic!     Such selection, colour and style.      Loved the kids clothes and home decor too!    I was also so happy to the prices of the clothing.     If they cost more in Canada, it is not much of a difference.    Bought some beautiful and comfy high heels for $34.     I had bought similar shoes at our local Walmart for $19 before Christmas and they destroyed my feet!






    
The one thing I would say, is that there was obviously massive amounts of people buying in a short period of time, so even though the store is brand new and the merchandise is all new.... there was certainly the look of "Black Friday Sale" in the store.     Popular items were completely gone or had little selection of size.     So if you go in knowing that, you won't be too disappointed.     Soon, shopping at Target will be a normal everyday thing and this frenzy of shopping will level out.

I have been struggling with not feeling well for years, but since last summer/fall I have been having intense itching, skin eczema and digestive issues.    After much investigation and change of diet, have come to find out it was all due to Food Sensitivity/Intolerence.       Thanks to the amazing skills of my Naturopath, Dr. Carly Wendler (Waterdown Village Chiropractic Group), I now have answers.    I was tested for Celiac Disease and found that while I tested negative (my score was 7.3... 15 is considered to be having Celiac), I do have Gluten Sensitivity which was confirmed by separate food sensitivity tests.    It was found that I have High or Extemely High Intolerence to Wheat, Spelt, Rye, Dairy, Eggs, Garlic & Almonds, with Moderate Intolerence to Corn, Peanuts, Turkey and Barley.   Dr. Carly can be found on-line at www.drcarlywendler.com and she can also be found on Facebook.    I highly recommend her.   
  
Food has become so genetically modified that more and more, people are developing problems with the food they eat which can go on for years undiagnosed.     So much so, that going Gluten Free and Vegan is much easier than it was 5 or 10 years ago.     The government has also seen the significance of people going Gluten Free and have a tax credit for those diagnosed with Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerence.     More information can be found at

but I would consult with your accountant or a tax professional about the requirements for receiving this benefit.     From what little I understand about this (I am not a tax expert), it seems like you may qualify to receive money back on the difference of the cost of food that has Gluten and food that is G Free.

I have been exploring many many different new aisles at my local grocery store and finding new specialty shops in order to serve my new dietary concerns.

In Waterdown, I have found that Sobey's and Fortino's have excellent Organic/Gluten Free and other Allergen Free products.     I have been pleasantly surprised at the wonderful selection.    Fortino's even has their dry goods, ready made freezer products, refrigerated food and homeopathic supplements all in the same area to make your shopping easier.     Bulk Barn has a great selection on the south wall of the store of gluten free flours, mixes and other product.    There are even little areas of the grocery sections of Walmart that offer some Gluten Free products.     Anyone with dietary restrictions knows that you need to read your labels.... my new way of shopping now.

Of course, whatever you are looking for that needs to be Gluten Free can be found at Goodness Me (locations in Waterdown, Burlington and Hamilton).      The staff are so helpful there.    Prices are a little more there, but if you are good for comparison shopping, you get to know what store carries what products.     My recommendation would be when you get your list of things to buy from your dietican/naturopth/homeopath or from your own independent study of the internet, I would try Fortino's first, Sobey's second to find out what product they have (look in every aisle, because some things are spread out (like at Sobey's) and then head to Goodness Me to finish off your list.    

I have spent hours researching recipes online, pinterest, and just basically googling Gluten Free etc... and have learned so much.     Tonight, I have just come across another great new outlet store to try out...   El Peto  in Cambridge....   http://www.elpeto.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=40&layout=blog&Itemid=61     I have seen their products carried in the local stores (Fortino's/Bulk Barn) and am curious to check out their outlet store to see if prices are any cheaper.    Maybe it'll be worth the short 25 minute drive to Cambridge.

I do love how accessible Waterdown is.    You can make it to so many major centres within 1/2 an hour to an hours drive.

This is a journey I have just begun... next week I will talk about the local bakeries and restaurants to find gluten free options.

Best Local Market

I love buying local and local markets are really my favourite.      There are fresh produce markets that operate year round like the Hamilton Farmers Market located downtown on York Blvd behind Jackson Square  (closed Mondays, Wednesday and Sundays).    It has been around for years and in 2011, the building underwent a renovation which has helped to put downtown Hamilton shopping back on the map for people in the area.     To learn more about the Hamilton market visit....

Waterdown is going through a population growth and so is local business.     Can you believe we now have 4 great ladies wear shops.     This is in addition to the great bridal/evening wear shopping we already have.

In the last year, we have 2 new stores for more selection.  Jupe and Pippa & Prue both located on Dundas Street between Mill and Main Streets.  I have shopped at both of these shops recently over Christmas & post Boxing Day.      There are really some great trendy clothing and accessories which would cover a large range of ages.    They have made such a great addition to the "core" Waterdown area and enhanced Waterdown's image as a great stop for shopping.

3 shopping days left.... Have you got your Christmas Shopping done???

I hate being near a mall probably by the time it is mid - November so I always try to get my shopping done early.     In the past few years, I have loved doing shopping on-line.    No line ups, you see what is in stock and you can do it all from the comfort of your home.

One place I love to shop on-line is Amazon.com     The US site is great and has alot of great variety and selection.    There is a Canadian site (Amazon.ca) but I find there is much less selection.     The one bad thing about buying from Amazon.com is that many of the sellers who make their products available for sale on Amazon, may not ship to Canada.     I was faced with that dilema this Christmas as there was something my daughter really wanted and I found it there, but I couldn't get delivery to my home.

I had heard many of my friends mention a place in Niagara Falls, NY called CBI USA, that is a postal outlet that you can send your parcels to and for a nominal fee they hold it for you to pick up.     Well, wanting my daughter to get the exact things she wanted, I thought I would try it out and have the parcel sent there.     I now have it set up on my Amazon profile as an alternate shipping address.   I placed the order... tracked the packages (the items came from 3 separate suppliers) and when all of them had made it to CBI, I waited the required 24 hrs so that they can log it into their system and I planned my trip across the border.   

From Waterdown it is only about 45-60 minutes to the Rainbow Bridge crossing.   Traffic was fairly light and moving at the border and I was through in about a half hour.     From the border, the CBI location is only about 10 minutes away.   It is a residential neighbourhood but the building is a warehouse and there is a parking lot across the street and up a little bit.     I did have a bit of trouble finding the street as the street sign had been stolen.    

Once inside there was a very long line, but at least it was still in the building.    I understand that Saturday and especially before Christmas the lineup can be out the building and can be upwards of an hour.    In all, I think I was in line about 20 minutes.    Once up to the counter, you give them your name and 2 pieces of picture ID and they check the system for your parcel.     All three of mine were successfully retrieved in under 5 minutes.   

I do suggest that when you place an order on-line to pick up there, print out your invoice which hopefully breaks down the cost of the merchandise, tax and shipping charges and bring with you for the border.   Depending on the value of the item, you may get away with not having to pay duty at the border.

CBI USA runs like a well oiled machine and the staff there were fantastic.    I highly recommend that if you want to save yourself the crazy custom charges that some on-line sites charge you to ship from the US, next time consider CBI USA postal outlet.     For more info on CBI, their hours and address please visit their website...  http://www.cbiusa.com/

Best Community Christmas Events

Our first official snow in Waterdown this evening.     A brutal commute for those who drive to work anywhere, especially out of town!      While driving tonight was tenuous, from the warmth and safety of my home I look out the window and see the beauty of the new fallen snow and Christmas lights.    Really puts me in a Christmas mood (as if I wasn't already!)

Christmas bazaars, home tours and Tree Lightings have been happening for weeks now.    Last weekend saw a wonderful, although frigid night for the special nightime Waterdown Santa Clause Parade.     This weekend marks even more activities in Waterdown and area.

The Waterdown BIA is inviting the community to join in for the 1st Annual Choral and Candle Walk this Saturday December the 1st.     People are asked to gather at Magnolia House Spa located at 20 Main Street North where the Waterdown District High School choir will lead off the singing.    Participants can purchase candles for the walk with proceeds going to Drummond House (a transition home for women & children in Waterdown).  

Several businesses like The Flamborough Review, Jitterbug Cafe, Brown Dog Cafe and Voortmans will be offering refreshments and treats.     At 630p, the Choral Walk volunteers will guide participants through the streets of Waterdown where they can enjoy performances by various choirs located along the way or they can sing along.     Choirs will be located at various areas along Main and Mills Streets including at Kitching Steepe Ludwig Funeral Home, Knox Presbyterian Church and the Waterdown Library.

You could possibly also see the CP Holiday Train going through Watedown tomorrow night on its way to a scheduled stop in Hamilton.    Each year the Holiday Train makes it's way along the tracks on a 3 week journey from Quebec to British Columbia for the Canadian Train and from Kanawake Mohawk Territory in Quebec to the North East & Mid West US ending up in Saskatchewan for the US Train.    This history of the train is to encourage folks to come out and donate money or bring food for their local Food Banks.      The Hamilton stop (from the US bound train) will happen around 8pm at Gage Park and Lawrence Road (western approach to Kinnear Yard opposite of Gage Park)   Please bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Hamilton Food Share.    Entertainers will perform at each stop... this year with the talents of The Claytones and Canadian Country Hall of Fame performer Tracey Brown.     For more information on the Holiday Train please visit the website at www.cpr.ca/en/in-your-community/holiday-train/Pages/Default.aspx

Best Christmas Home Tour

Yes, it is not quite Remembrance Day.... and I am glad that more and more people are passionate about wearing their poppies... supporting Veterans and honouring those who have or are currently serving our country.    I have heard more and more people talk about Remembrance Day this year than I can ever remember, and there is a movement starting about this honoured day being made a Statutory Holiday so we may properly observe.

That being said... Christmas Bazaars and Christmas Home Tours have already begun.    Tonight I had the pleasure of finally going to the Junior League of Burlington Christmas Home Tour.     There are 5 homes on the tour this year... One in Ancaster, one in Waterdown and three in Burlington, one of which includes Historic Ireland House which operates as a year round museum.      Every single home was spectacular.... and the decorators were on hand to talk about where they got items and how they came up with some great innovative ideas.     I could not pick a favourite but the Waterdown home was definately a home that stood out in my mind.    How lovely to be able to see such a majestic older home in the core all decorated for Christmas.    I have long admired the home because each year they have a stunning 3 dimensional star lit up in in one of the big trees right on the corner of the property.   Anytime you drive down Main Street in Waterdown around Christmas you can see this light pretty much from both ends.

If you can't make it out to view the Junior League homes this weekend, another wonderful home tour is happening next weekend at Drummond House.     Drummond House is a transitional home for women & children in Waterdown on the 5th Concession next to Flamborough Baptist Church.     The home only opens it's doors to the public one day a year during their annual Christmas Home Tour and Bake Sale.      Last year, they moved the Bake Sale & Silent Auction next door to the Flamborough Baptist Church because so many people were touring the home they needed more space for the Bake Sale and Silent Auction.     This year, will be a three part tour of the Drummond House activities on Saturday November 17th from 10 am to 4pm.     First, you can view the Home all decorated for Christmas.   2nd you can visit Flamborough Baptist Church where there will be a Bake Sale, Raffle Items (including an iPad), Vendors like Tupperware, Arbonne and Pampered Chef, Christmas Cafe and a Treasure Table of little items offered for Toonie.   Finally, the newly renovated space for Rescued and ReStored up in Freelton located at the Freelton Antique Market.     Each of the 3 locations will be offering up a "freebie".   At the house you can enjoy a free cup of Hot Apple Cider from the Drummond Orchards, at the Bake Sale you will get a free cookie, and at Rescued and ReStored you can get $5 off any purchase over $25.

Best Dog Park

I have done alot of driving between Burlington and Waterdown over the years... A few years ago I found a new route to travel between them... up King Road north of the North Service Road.     It really is pretty drive, especially at this time of year.   The route is tree lined, barely any traffic, wildlife, windy road and such a peaceful route.    Halfway up King Road, I would notice a little park called Bayview Park that was always bustling with lots of dogs running around.   

This week, I was cutting through King Road, enjoying the amazing fall colours and I had a few minutes so I decided to pull off and watch the activity at Bayview Park.     The spot itself is stunning at this time of year.     Beautiful fall foilage, view of the Skyway Bridge and just the amazing peace and quiet.     There is a very large fenced in area where the dogs are free to run around carefree without leash.

Many owners meet there and let their dogs play together.    Some people show up and meet new people and dogs.     One lady there I saw must have either been a dog walker or worked in a kennel as she she had about 6 dogs!    All of them well trained and happily roaming around and the unmistakeable whistle called them all to her side immediately.

I don't have a dog, but I imagine that if I did, this would be an ideal place to bring my dog to have playdates with other dogs.

The park is serviced by the City of Burlington and you can also see areas nearby that cater to model airplane/rocket launching and there is also a ball diamond on the property.

Best All Day Breakfast

Nothing I love better than Sunday morning brunch or breakfast out.    My husband loves to have breakfast anytime of the day!    When we find a great all day breakfast menu, then we have a new restaurant to add to our choice of places to go out to eat.

We had the pleasure of eating at AJ's Grill this past Monday.    It was Thanksgiving Monday, and my inlaws were visiting so we decided to go out for late brunch/early dinner.      They have such a great selection on the menu you can get everything from Breakfast items (all day), to sandwiches, burgers, wraps plus full dinner entrees!    A bonus for our family was they also offer a children's menu AND a Senior's Menu!!!

Since it was Thanksgiving, my husband and his mom had the Turkey Dinner special which was excellent.    My father in law had the Steak Dinner which he enjoyed very much.    I had the Chicken Parmigian which was very good and my daughters both had the Chocolate Chip Pancakes.    The portions were huge for all meals.     You will not leave here hungry.    

The staff were absolutely lovely.     We had great service from our server and could not have had a better experience overall.      Everyone's food was tasty, hot, freshly made and the prices were very reasonable.     The restaurant itself had contemporary upscale diner decor.    Great atmosphere!

If it is breakfast items you are looking for, you will not want for anything... they have everything from pancakes/waffles/french toast, eggs, bacon/sausage, homefries, eggs benedict and omelettes.

Best Office Supplies Store

I love the small town merchants of Waterdown.   They give the town character, and many of the local shops are a destination place for shopping, bringing in people from outside of our lovely town.

With the quick growth of the town, there has also been growth of big retailers to town as well.     As a business person working in Waterdown, I am so happy that I no longer have to drive into Burlington or Ancaster anymore to pick up supplies for my office that weren't carried at any of the shops in town.    Staples has arrived in Watedown (like a month ago!!!) and I finally made it in there this week to check them out.

I have been saving my money, and decided to jump in and get an iPad.    My first Mac product!      Not long after going into the store on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, I was being helped.    I learned all there was to know about the different versions, costs and how they could operate the way I wanted within my budget.     I was helped by "Pedro" who was so fantastic.     He knew the product inside and out, knew what each version could offer me exactly what I needed and hooked up all my technology (blackberry, emails accounts and set up my Apple id and accounts).      Setting those things up can be so frustrating, so to have the friendly, helpful services of Pedro guiding me through the process, it really brought home the Staples slogan to me "that was easy".

I've always been a Staples shopper, but the staff at the Waterdown store are so fantastic....  I will only shop that Staples store and support them in our community.     I'm so grateful to Pedro and recommend you seek him out if you are looking for Technical Sales and Support.     He knows it all!

I also really love that you can take your used printer ink cartridges, batteries and old electronic office equipment in to be recycled or disposed of.
