Best US shipping address

3 shopping days left.... Have you got your Christmas Shopping done???

I hate being near a mall probably by the time it is mid - November so I always try to get my shopping done early.     In the past few years, I have loved doing shopping on-line.    No line ups, you see what is in stock and you can do it all from the comfort of your home.

One place I love to shop on-line is Amazon.com     The US site is great and has alot of great variety and selection.    There is a Canadian site (Amazon.ca) but I find there is much less selection.     The one bad thing about buying from Amazon.com is that many of the sellers who make their products available for sale on Amazon, may not ship to Canada.     I was faced with that dilema this Christmas as there was something my daughter really wanted and I found it there, but I couldn't get delivery to my home.

I had heard many of my friends mention a place in Niagara Falls, NY called CBI USA, that is a postal outlet that you can send your parcels to and for a nominal fee they hold it for you to pick up.     Well, wanting my daughter to get the exact things she wanted, I thought I would try it out and have the parcel sent there.     I now have it set up on my Amazon profile as an alternate shipping address.   I placed the order... tracked the packages (the items came from 3 separate suppliers) and when all of them had made it to CBI, I waited the required 24 hrs so that they can log it into their system and I planned my trip across the border.
Map - CBI USA Warehouse Location
From Waterdown it is only about 45-60 minutes to the Rainbow Bridge crossing.   Traffic was fairly light and moving at the border and I was through in about a half hour.     From the border, the CBI location is only about 10 minutes away.   It is a residential neighbourhood but the building is a warehouse and there is a parking lot across the street and up a little bit.     I did have a bit of trouble finding the street as the street sign had been stolen.

Once inside there was a very long line, but at least it was still in the building.    I understand that Saturday and especially before Christmas the lineup can be out the building and can be upwards of an hour.    In all, I think I was in line about 20 minutes.    Once up to the counter, you give them your name and 2 pieces of picture ID and they check the system for your parcel.     All three of mine were successfully retrieved in under 5 minutes.

I do suggest that when you place an order on-line to pick up there, print out your invoice which hopefully breaks down the cost of the merchandise, tax and shipping charges and bring with you for the border.   Depending on the value of the item, you may get away with not having to pay duty at the border.

CBI USA runs like a well oiled machine and the staff there were fantastic.    I highly recommend that if you want to save yourself the crazy custom charges that some on-line sites charge you to ship from the US, next time consider CBI USA postal outlet.     For more info on CBI, their hours and address please visit their website...  http://www.cbiusa.com/

Best Community Christmas Events

Our first official snow in Waterdown this evening.     A brutal commute for those who drive to work anywhere, especially out of town!      While driving tonight was tenuous, from the warmth and safety of my home I look out the window and see the beauty of the new fallen snow and Christmas lights.    Really puts me in a Christmas mood (as if I wasn't already!)

Christmas bazaars, home tours and Tree Lightings have been happening for weeks now.    Last weekend saw a wonderful, although frigid night for the special nightime Waterdown Santa Clause Parade.     This weekend marks even more activities in Waterdown and area.

The Waterdown BIA is inviting the community to join in for the 1st Annual Choral and Candle Walk this Saturday December the 1st.     People are asked to gather at Magnolia House Spa located at 20 Main Street North where the Waterdown District High School choir will lead off the singing.    Participants can purchase candles for the walk with proceeds going to Drummond House (a transition home for women & children in Waterdown).

Several businesses like The Flamborough Review, Jitterbug Cafe, Brown Dog Cafe and Voortmans will be offering refreshments and treats.     At 630p, the Choral Walk volunteers will guide participants through the streets of Waterdown where they can enjoy performances by various choirs located along the way or they can sing along.     Choirs will be located at various areas along Main and Mills Streets including at Kitching Steepe Ludwig Funeral Home, Knox Presbyterian Church and the Waterdown Library.

For more information on the Choral and Candle Walk please visit the Waterdown Business Improvement Area's website at  www.waterdownbia.ca/upcoming_events.html

You could possibly also see the CP Holiday Train going through Watedown tomorrow night on its way to a scheduled stop in Hamilton.    Each year the Holiday Train makes it's way along the tracks on a 3 week journey from Quebec to British Columbia for the Canadian Train and from Kanawake Mohawk Territory in Quebec to the North East & Mid West US ending up in Saskatchewan for the US Train.    This history of the train is to encourage folks to come out and donate money or bring food for their local Food Banks.      The Hamilton stop (from the US bound train) will happen around 8pm at Gage Park and Lawrence Road (western approach to Kinnear Yard opposite of Gage Park)   Please bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Hamilton Food Share.    Entertainers will perform at each stop... this year with the talents of The Claytones and Canadian Country Hall of Fame performer Tracey Brown.     For more information on the Holiday Train please visit the website at www.cpr.ca/en/in-your-community/holiday-train/Pages/Default.aspx

Best Christmas Home Tour

Yes, it is not quite Remembrance Day.... and I am glad that more and more people are passionate about wearing their poppies... supporting Veterans and honouring those who have or are currently serving our country.    I have heard more and more people talk about Remembrance Day this year than I can ever remember, and there is a movement starting about this honoured day being made a Statutory Holiday so we may properly observe.

That being said... Christmas Bazaars and Christmas Home Tours have already begun.    Tonight I had the pleasure of finally going to the Junior League of Burlington Christmas Home Tour.     There are 5 homes on the tour this year... One in Ancaster, one in Waterdown and three in Burlington, one of which includes Historic Ireland House which operates as a year round museum.      Every single home was spectacular.... and the decorators were on hand to talk about where they got items and how they came up with some great innovative ideas.     I could not pick a favourite but the Waterdown home was definately a home that stood out in my mind.    How lovely to be able to see such a majestic older home in the core all decorated for Christmas.    I have long admired the home because each year they have a stunning 3 dimensional star lit up in in one of the big trees right on the corner of the property.   Anytime you drive down Main Street in Waterdown around Christmas you can see this light pretty much from both ends.

To learn more about the 30th Anniversary of the Junior League Home Tour or purchase tickets online, please visit their website... http://www.juniorleague.ca/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=3&tabid=12

If you can't make it out to view the Junior League homes this weekend, another wonderful home tour is happening next weekend at Drummond House.     Drummond House is a transitional home for women & children in Waterdown on the 5th Concession next to Flamborough Baptist Church.     The home only opens it's doors to the public one day a year during their annual Christmas Home Tour and Bake Sale.      Last year, they moved the Bake Sale & Silent Auction next door to the Flamborough Baptist Church because so many people were touring the home they needed more space for the Bake Sale and Silent Auction.     This year, will be a three part tour of the Drummond House activities on Saturday November 17th from 10 am to 4pm.     First, you can view the Home all decorated for Christmas.   2nd you can visit Flamborough Baptist Church where there will be a Bake Sale, Raffle Items (including an iPad), Vendors like Tupperware, Arbonne and Pampered Chef, Christmas Cafe and a Treasure Table of little items offered for Toonie.   Finally, the newly renovated space for Rescued and ReStored up in Freelton located at the Freelton Antique Market.     Each of the 3 locations will be offering up a "freebie".   At the house you can enjoy a free cup of Hot Apple Cider from the Drummond Orchards, at the Bake Sale you will get a free cookie, and at Rescued and ReStored you can get $5 off any purchase over $25.

To read the lastest about what is going on at Drummond House including the Christmas event you can read their latest newsletter on-line at: http://www.drummondhouse.ca/newsletter/NewsletterFall%20v7.pdf

Best Dog Park

I have done alot of driving between Burlington and Waterdown over the years... A few years ago I found a new route to travel between them... up King Road north of the North Service Road.     It really is pretty drive, especially at this time of year.   The route is tree lined, barely any traffic, wildlife, windy road and such a peaceful route.    Halfway up King Road, I would notice a little park called Bayview Park that was always bustling with lots of dogs running around.

This week, I was cutting through King Road, enjoying the amazing fall colours and I had a few minutes so I decided to pull off and watch the activity at Bayview Park.     The spot itself is stunning at this time of year.     Beautiful fall foilage, view of the Skyway Bridge and just the amazing peace and quiet.     There is a very large fenced in area where the dogs are free to run around carefree without leash.

Many owners meet there and let their dogs play together.    Some people show up and meet new people and dogs.     One lady there I saw must have either been a dog walker or worked in a kennel as she she had about 6 dogs!    All of them well trained and happily roaming around and the unmistakeable whistle called them all to her side immediately.

I don't have a dog, but I imagine that if I did, this would be an ideal place to bring my dog to have playdates with other dogs.

The park is serviced by the City of Burlington and you can also see areas nearby that cater to model airplane/rocket launching and there is also a ball diamond on the property.

Best All Day Breakfast

Nothing I love better than Sunday morning brunch or breakfast out.    My husband loves to have breakfast anytime of the day!    When we find a great all day breakfast menu, then we have a new restaurant to add to our choice of places to go out to eat.

We had the pleasure of eating at AJ's Grill this past Monday.    It was Thanksgiving Monday, and my inlaws were visiting so we decided to go out for late brunch/early dinner.      They have such a great selection on the menu you can get everything from Breakfast items (all day), to sandwiches, burgers, wraps plus full dinner entrees!    A bonus for our family was they also offer a children's menu AND a Senior's Menu!!!

Since it was Thanksgiving, my husband and his mom had the Turkey Dinner special which was excellent.    My father in law had the Steak Dinner which he enjoyed very much.    I had the Chicken Parmigian which was very good and my daughters both had the Chocolate Chip Pancakes.    The portions were huge for all meals.     You will not leave here hungry.

The staff were absolutely lovely.     We had great service from our server and could not have had a better experience overall.      Everyone's food was tasty, hot, freshly made and the prices were very reasonable.     The restaurant itself had contemporary upscale diner decor.    Great atmosphere!

If it is breakfast items you are looking for, you will not want for anything... they have everything from pancakes/waffles/french toast, eggs, bacon/sausage, homefries, eggs benedict and omelettes.

You can check out AJ's menu on-line at   www.ajsgrill.ca  or visit their restaurant at 94 Dundas Street East in Waterdown (in the plaza just east of Walmart beside Pita Pit)

Best Office Supplies Store

I love the small town merchants of Waterdown.   They give the town character, and many of the local shops are a destination place for shopping, bringing in people from outside of our lovely town.

With the quick growth of the town, there has also been growth of big retailers to town as well.     As a business person working in Waterdown, I am so happy that I no longer have to drive into Burlington or Ancaster anymore to pick up supplies for my office that weren't carried at any of the shops in town.    Staples has arrived in Watedown (like a month ago!!!) and I finally made it in there this week to check them out.

I have been saving my money, and decided to jump in and get an iPad.    My first Mac product!      Not long after going into the store on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, I was being helped.    I learned all there was to know about the different versions, costs and how they could operate the way I wanted within my budget.     I was helped by "Pedro" who was so fantastic.     He knew the product inside and out, knew what each version could offer me exactly what I needed and hooked up all my technology (blackberry, emails accounts and set up my Apple id and accounts).      Setting those things up can be so frustrating, so to have the friendly, helpful services of Pedro guiding me through the process, it really brought home the Staples slogan to me "that was easy".
Staples
I've always been a Staples shopper, but the staff at the Waterdown store are so fantastic....  I will only shop that Staples store and support them in our community.     I'm so grateful to Pedro and recommend you seek him out if you are looking for Technical Sales and Support.     He knows it all!

I also really love that you can take your used printer ink cartridges, batteries and old electronic office equipment in to be recycled or disposed of.

Best Dundas Festival

Cactus Festival Crowds
36 years ago, the Hamilton District Chamber of Commerce and the Dundas Jaycees began looking for a focus around which to build a community festival.

Dundas, already internationally recognized for the Cacti produced by the local Ben Veldhuis Cactus Greenhouses, the group received Ben’s approval of the name, “Cactus Festival”.  The first festival lasted 9 days, and began with a parade.   It featured sports events, a film night, a casino night, a dance at the community center, and midway rides in Dundas driving park.    Over the years, it grew and in 1979, the downtown merchants agreed to hold their sidewalk sale as part
of the Festival.  Other craft vendors and exhibitors were invited too.

The festival moved to King St. and the reputation of the festival grew, year by year. For the sum of $1.00, the Jaycees sold the rights to the Town. Since 1979, the festival has been tirelessly organized by local volunteers; The Cactus Festival Committee.

Occurring every 3rd weekend in August, ‘Cactus’ attracts visitors from across the nation and is the unofficial ‘homecoming’ event for any and all who have lived in the community.

This event began tonight... Friday August 17th, and runs until Sunday August 19th.     Some of the activities you can enjoy this weekend are:   Cactus Family Fun Zone, Cactus Fun Zone Stage (children's acts, entertainment & artists), Cactus Red Carpet Meet & Greet (with animated/cartoon characters), Cactus Express Train, and the Fortino's 8th Annual Baby Cactus Contest (happening Sat. August 18th for babies 3-18 months old... every baby entered is recognized and receives and official Cactus Tumbleweed Certificate).    For a list of the activities in the Family Fun Zone and times for the judging of the baby contest, check out  http://www.dundascactusfest.ca/Family_Fun_Zone_DundasCactusFestival.html

While this is a great event for families, there is lots to do for everyone.     Maybe you'd enjoy Art in the Alley, shopping with over 100 vendors, the midway/amusements or take in many of the great acts that will be on the 3 main stages.     Big name acts that will be performing on Saturday evening are "The Spoons" at 630pm and "Honeymoon Suite" at 8pm.    For a list of all acts on the three stages, all weekend long, please visit http://www.dundascactusfest.ca/Events_and_Entertainment_at_The_Festival.html

Admission is FREE to this great Dundas event.

Best Ice Cream Festival

Gosh, need I say more!   You had me at Ice Cream....  This year marks the 8th Annual Westfield Heritage Ice Cream Festival.

Westfield is the perfect setting for families and friends to spend the day not only learning about the history of ice cream, but tasting it too!    There are various demonstrations of historical methods of making ice cream throughout the village... whether it be shaken, hand cranked or motor churned.    You will find ice cream samples in many of the different buildings.

Patrons can also purchase Breyers Ice Cream Cones or Top-Your-Own Sundaes in the Ironwood Ice Cream Parlour.   Those wishing to have more filling food can purchase hotdogs, hamburgers, french fries plus soft serve ice cream in the picnic area.    Also in the picnic area will be DJ Rock'n Ray Michaels, Cartoon Bob and some special performances.

Visitors to this years festival will be treated to a step back in time to an Edwardian Carnival.    There will be carnival games, visit animals in the barn,  free horse and wagon rides and even listen to the pitch of an old fashioned travelling salesman.

On Sunday, at the Bandstand location will be early Canadian music from 1 til 4 with a couple of 15 minute presentations at 1pm and 330pm called "Looking back to 1912".   From noon til 4pm in the Mountsberg Church will be Babette Puppet Theatre.

On Monday, from 1 til 2pm in the Bandstand will be the Royal Scottish Country Dancers, from 2 til 3pm in the Bandstand will be the Dundas Concert Band, and again from noon til 4pm in the Mountsberg Church will be Babette Puppet Theatre.

The festival takes place Sunday August 5th, 2012 and Monday August 6th, 2012 from 10am to 4pm.   For more information please visit www.westfieldheritage.ca

Best Unique Accessories

I love shopping local and I love to browse unique shops where you can find merchandise that is makes a community a destination place to shop.      My mom, grandmother and I were shopping on Concession Street in Hamilton last week and came across a really great shop for ladies.

Linseed's, is a wonderful shop that has all kinds of unique accessories and items.     You can find co-ordinating jewelery sets (earrings, necklace... maybe a ring or bracelet), shoes and purses, scarves, watches, one of a kind jewelery, fascinators, headbands, jeweled combs/barretts and even some wall art.  I found lots of beautiful and different Breast Cancer accessories too.

The greatest part about the store is everything is already grouped for you by colour.      They had everything you'd need grouped for you in green, orange, yellow, red, blue, black, pink or purple etc....    At Linseed's you will find special occasion jewelery that has a little more bling, or you can find lots of great everyday costume jewelery that is great to accessorize with outfits for work.   You can also find some lovely bridal accessories too.

They even carry name brands like Nine West, and I found the prices to be really really good.    So the next time you have a special occasion coming up or have a specific colour of accessory that you are having trouble finding to go with your outfit, check out Linseed's in Hamilton at 542 Concession Street (just east of Upper Wentworth) near the Zarky's.    Just look for the red awning and enjoy shopping at Linseed's!

Best Liquidation Sale

As much as I am looking forward to seeing Target come to town next spring, I am sad to see another Canadian store going out of business.    Our local Zellers will close it's doors on September 15th.     Total liquidation of the store has begun.     Even the fixtures of the store and cart corrals in the parking lot are for sale!      Currently, promotions say that there are "up to 40%" selected items.     I have been to the store several times over the last couple of weeks looking for bargains, and yes there is a clearance area where things are 40% off, but mostly everything is 20% off.     Still a great discount and great to go in now while there is still some selection available.

Right now they are having their mid-summer blowout.    So in additional to the the sale prices, SAVE an EXTRA 50% off all Previously Reduced Fashion & Footwear and SAVE 40% off all Yellow ticket Bedding. PLUS Clearance coupon Savings! Ends July 19th.     To get your clearance coupon please visit....     https://www.facebook.com/ZellersCanada/app_190322544333196

Best Waterpark

Hamilton has broken a 34-year-old record for the hottest May 25.    The old record was 28.4 C, set in 1978.   The record was bested Friday afternoon when the temperature hit 29.
The new record was recorded at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. by Environment Canada at its weather station at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

But it’s possible other parts of the city got even hotter.  Some saw the outdoor thermometer on their car record the temperature at 33C!   The national weather agency had forecasted that Hamilton could would see temperatures hit 30.

Environment Canada says the average maximum temperature for the day is 20.4.   If you need something to take your mind off the heat, think about the lowest temperature recorded for the day — since they started keeping records in 1960 — a very chilly 2.6 C, in 1992.

On such a hot day like today, we start to dream of ways to cool off.... fortunately we have air conditioning at our house and many of my neighbours are fortunate to have a pool in their own back yard.

We also have quick access to a fantastic attraction where many locals like to spend a lazy day at the best Waterpark around in this area... Wild Waterworks.    We will have til next weekend to look forward to going there as  their website...  http://www.wild-waterworks.com   says the park does not open until next weekend... June 2/3, 2012.    With the warm weather we've had the last couple of years for the May long weekends,  maybe going forward they will consider opening earlier next year??!!

Please note: Wild Waterworks is a SMOKE FREE facility.

Located in Confederation Park, just off Centennial Parkway in Hamilton, Wild Waterworks offers a perfect place to spend a warm summer day.   Ride the four tube slides: Night Rider and Blue Demon and Vertigo and Sidewinder.

Move on and surf the waves in one of Canada's largest outdoor wave pools. Over a million gallons of heated water splash down every minute.

Discounted tickets to Wild Waterworks available at participating Mac's Milk stores.

The fun continues with the heart-pounding twists of the Corkscrew and the Kamikaze - the park's six-storey body slides.

Toddlers will love Little Squirt Works, a fun wading pool with slides, sprays, mists and fountains.

Confederation Park is an 83-hectare package of fun and adventure located on the shores of Lake Ontario in Hamilton. Here you'll find some of the area's best food and fun throughout the year. To see everything Confederation Park has to offer, go to the website and download the Confederation Park - Wild Waterworks Brochure.

You can purchase the Go-Solo Season's Pass for $69.99 or a Family Pass is available for $223.96 (for a family of 4, with an additional charge of $55.99 extra per person) which includes a free parking pass for Confederation Park.    With the Season Pass there are VIP privileges like a fast VIP gate entrance.

Best Victoria Day Fireworks

We've been looking forward to this weekend for so long... the first long weekend which seems to kick off the summer season.

The May long weekend has long been associated with opening up the cottage, camping, gardening, bbq'ing and enjoying spending time with the people you love to hang out with.    Days prior to the long weekend are usually spent "praying" for nice weather.

I love the long weekend as it is a goal for me to get my gardens (front, back & side!!) edged, mulched and annuals spread around to give summer long impact between the spurts of bloom between the perennials.

It is also a time when people look forward to FIREWORKS!

There are many variety stores, temporary mobile trailer stores and sections of retail stores that sell fireworks for you to set off (safely) on your own property (please note recommendations at the end of this post).

For the Victoria Day 2012 long weekend, you will only find Public Fireworks on Sunday May 20th at the Dundas Driving Park, located on Cross Street in Dundas.     These are the official City of Hamilton Victoria Day Fireworks and Burlington does not have Public Fireworks this weekend.     The Fireworks in Dundas are presented by the Dundas Valley Sunrise Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Hamilton.    Volunteers will be on hand to collect cash donations to help fund Rotary Community Projects.     PLEASE NOTE THAT PERSONAL FIREWORKS AND & SPARKLERS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE PARK.

Fireworks generally are set off when the sun goes down (sometime around 9-915pm.    As these are the only fireworks in the area, best get there early so you are not disappointed.

Guidelines for Setting off Fireworks:

  • Family fireworks may be set off only on Victoria Day, Canada Day and the two days immediately preceding or following these two holidays.
  • No child shall set off family fireworks other than a sparkler where the child is under direct supervision of an adult at all times.
  • No person shall set off family fireworks on any land of which he or she is not the owner without first obtaining written permission of the owner.   Fireworks shall not be discharged over roadways.
  • Appoint one person to be in charge who knows about the hazards of fireworks.   Carefully read and follow the label directions including requirements for safe distances to spectators.
  • Always keep a pail of water or a water hose nearby.
  • Firmly set the fireworks at least 1/2 its length in a pail of sand or dirt, angled slightly away from spectators, checking wind direction and speed.
  • Never lean over a firework when lighting it.   Never re-light a "dud" firework.
  • Supervise the use of sparklers with children.    They burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing and cause severe burns.   As the sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout, immediately soak in water.

Best Gas Prices

Can you believe the price of gasoline?    I got my first car about 20 years ago, and back then the price of gas was a glorious 49.5 a litre!   Now, I consider myself lucky to fill up for under $75!

I've noticed over the years that in and around Waterdown, the best gas prices are usually on Highway 6 (North to Guelph) between the 6th Concession East and Carlisle Road.    It is usually a cent or two lower so if you need to go up that way it is very worth it to fill up when in the neighbourhood.    I wouldn't make a special trip to go out of my way to fill up on Highway 6 since the savings of going up there would probably be lost driving up there and back unnecessarily.

Technology can be wonderful, and I just recently discovered "Gas Buddy".    You can go on-line (www.gasbuddy.com)  to register a membership and immediately be able to find the best gas prices in your area... OR, you can download the Gas Buddy Mobile App for your smartphone.   I also found that Gas Buddy has a Hamilton specific site they operate at http://www.hamiltongasprices.com/    These sites offer a fascinating look at trends/maps/charts for the area, and all across Canada.     Gas Buddy's website also offers a great map to show you what gas prices are right across Canada.  http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_can_gastemperaturemap.aspx

Just logging in to Gas Buddy tonight on my phone I found that prices can be varied around town.    The Husky at the corner of Dundas & Hamilton was charging 135.6 a litre and just a little further down Dundas Street at the Esso Station (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken) it was 131.8.      The gas stations on Highway 6 range from 130.9 (Pioneer) to 131.6 (Olco).

In these times of expensive gas, it is great that there is a website/mobile app like Gas Buddy to help us out with our comparative shopping.

Best Mom to Mom Sale

Mom2Mom 2012Over the last number of years I have been hearing the term "Mom to Mom Sale" more and more.    It makes great sense... Anyone with kids knows that you have a small fortune of clothes that your kids have outgrown and in many cases they have never worn.    It presents a great opportunity for you to be able to make some money selling your gently used children's clothes, or pick up some new to you clothing.

A Mom-to-Mom Sale is essentially a huge rummage sale where you can buy gently used baby and kids' items directly from sellers.   Get great deals on second hand baby clothing, kids' clothing, toys, games, furniture and gear.
Generally, to participate as a seller, simply register for a table. You bring your items to the sale and sell them yourself.    Whatever you make at the sale, you keep!
As a buyer, just show up on the day of the sale and pay your admission. Bring cash to pay for your items and make sure you have change. Reusable shopping bags are great for toting your treasures.

Tomorrow is when one of the biggest Mom 2 Mom Sales in the area is happening at Flamborough Baptist Church in Waterdown located at #41 on the 5th Concession East (just east of Terra Greenhouses)

Here's an excerpt from the churches website:
"DateSaturday March 24 2012
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
DetailsLocation: Church auditorium
Admission: $2 for ages 12 and up

."

Click on the link below for a map of how to get to the church.   Happy Shopping!

Best Photo Opportunity

What a glorious week.    I'm loving this warm weather, and gardens everywhere in Southern Ontario are awakening from their slumber.   I can see daffodils, crocuses and tulips starting to emerge in my garden.

We moved here to Waterdown 10 years ago when I was pregnant with our youngest.    Our first spring I noticed in the Flamborough Review, that a local greenhouse/nursery "Connons" did a special photo shoot with very young children called "Tots in Pots".     What a great way to celebrate spring and have a special photo of your children.    We took advantage of the opportunity when our girls were 1+ yrs and almost 3yrs old.    I treasure our special photo taken in 2004.

Plans are underway for Connon Nurseries 12th Annual "Tots in Pots" Photo Day.     They will take place on Saturday April 7th from 9am to 5pm.   A professional photographer will take a picture of your child(ren) aged 0-4 yrs "planted" in a blanket lined pot.     Make sure you call ahead to book your time at Connon's (905) 689-4631.   The cost is only $12.99, but the memories will last a lifetime!

UPDATE:  March 29th, 2013 - No "Tots in Pots" this year at Connon's.    Not a good response last year so they decided not to do it this year.

Best Maple Syrup Festival

Spring is coming!   I'm already seeing shoots from my spring bulbs in my garden, the Robins are out and about and the sap is running from Maple Trees... sure signs of spring!

When I think about what things remind me of Canada and being Canadian I think of Maple Syrup.   Making Maple Syrup is a process that is older than Canada itself.    A few years ago, we took our girls to Westfield Heritage Villiage in Rockton (just a short drive from Waterdown) so they could learn about the legends and techniques of making Maple Syrup which started many years ago from Canada's First Nations People.

from Wikepedia:

"Maple syrup is a syrup usually made from the xylem sap of sugar maple, red maple, or black maple trees, although it can also be made from other maple species. In cold climates, these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before the winter; the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in the spring.  Maple trees can be tapped by boring holes into their trunks and collecting the exuded sap. The sap is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup.
Maple syrup was first collected and used by aboriginal peoples of North America.  The practice was adopted by European settlers, who gradually improved production methods.  Technological improvements in the 1970s further refined syrup processing.   The Canadian province of Quebec is by far the largest producer, responsible for about three-quarters of the world's output; Canadian exports of maple syrup exceed C$145 million (approximately US$141 million) per year. Vermont is the largest producer in the United States, generating about 5.5 percent of the global supply.

Maple syrup is graded according to the Canada, United States, or Vermont scales based on its density and translucency. Sucrose is the most prevalent sugar in maple syrup.  In Canada, syrups must be at least 66 percent sugar and be made exclusively from maple sap[1] to qualify as maple syrup.  In the United States, a syrup must be made almost entirely from maple sap to be labelled as "maple"."

Tours and Demonstrations run from 10am to 4pm on Sunday March 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.    If you are looking for something fun to do with the kids during March Break, they are open on Wednesday March 14th and Thursday March 15th of the March Break.

The Sweet Tast of Spring Maple Syrup Festival at Westfield includes a full schedule of activities.     There will be horse and wagon rides, tours through Westfield's many historic buildings and shops, as well as the opportunity to enjoy Canada's favourite sweetener.    You'll be able to see demonstrated the way of collecting and making Maple Syrup over the centuries.   As you wander around the grounds you will see many of the trees with a bucket attached and a spout inserted into the tree to extract the Maple Sap.    You'll also see how the Aboriginals made syrup and sugar by using a hollowed out log and hot rocks, how the Pioneers used the three cauldron method to prepare the sweet syrup and how modern method uses the evaporator in the Sugar Shack.    And you'll get to sample the  maple syrup and maple sugar too!

To start or end the day, make sure that you check out the Ironwood Building where guests can sit down and enjoy a pancake and sausage (or ham) breakfast for just $1 per item, made courtesy of the St. George Lions Club.

Admission to Westfield Heritage Village is $11 for Adults, $10 for Seniors, $6.50 for children 6-12 and children aged 5 and under get in for free.

Best Airport

With March Break coming up, many people are looking for ways to escape to warmer climates.   If I have to fly somewhere, I ALWAYS check to see if I can fly out of Hamilton's John C Munro International Airport rather than having to fly out of Toronto.    Best thing is from Waterdown you can make it there in less than a half an hour.    Hamilton's little airport is the BEST way to fly... period!    For years my family from Nova Scotia have been flying in to Hamilton, which helps them stay away from the Toronto traffic which they prefer to avoid at all costs.

In February 2007, our family flew into Orlando on WestJet from the Hamilton airport and it was such a positive experience.    My husband had never been to the airport so when we pulled into the parking lot and saw all the available parking he questioned me "Is this it?".   "Yes, this is the Hamilton Airport." I replied.    We parked the car grabbed our luggage and within two minutes were at the ticket counter.... His reaction when we got inside "Wow!"    He was so pleasantly surprised with the ease of parking and no line ups.

(from Wikipedia...)  History

The airport was originally built in 1940 as the Mount Hope Airport, a Royal Canadian Air Force base. During World War II, the field hosted two units for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan: first, No.10 Elementary Flying Training School (later moved to RCAF Station Pendleton) using the De Havilland Tiger Moth and Fleet Finch, then No.33 Air Navigation School using the Avro Anson. After the war, the airport gradually shifted towards civil use, until the military ceased using it as a base for Air Reserve operations in 1964.

Hamilton turned over operation of the airport to TradePort International Corp. in 1996. In 2007 YVR Airport Services (YVRAS), which runs the Vancouver International Airport, took over 100 per cent ownership of TradePort in a $13-million deal.

Future

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has pushed for the construction of the Pickering Airport to relieve Toronto Pearson International Airport, claiming that Hamilton is too far from the city of Toronto core to be practical as a major hub for travelers. Critics point out that the reliever airports for Boston, Massachusetts (T.F. Green State Airport in Providence, Rhode Island and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, New Hampshire) are utilized effectively despite being further from the Boston city centre than Munro Airport is from the Toronto city centre. Should the GTAA decide not to build the proposed Pickering Airport, which could prove controversial due to the required expropriation of land, Hamilton may have an increase in passenger traffic and possibly new airlines.

Accidents and incidents

The airport received notoriety when a chartered Boeing 707 carrying rock band Bon Jovi skidded off the runway in January, 2006.

Best Source for your Single Cup Brewer

Christmas 2010 I received a great Christmas present from my hubby, and I use it at least once a day, if not more.     I got a Keurig Single Cup Brewer.     I had done the big debate... Keurig or Tassimo?   What is this Dolce Gusto thing?    After much deliberation, I chose the Keurig.    (this reminded me of the debates in the 80's between VHS or Beta...)

At that time, the K-Cups weren't as popular as they are now in your grocery store.    Basically any grocery store has a pretty good selection of them now, and there are many on-line sites for stocking up on everything you could possibly need for your single cup brewer.

About the time I received my machine, I had seen a segment on CH Morning Live and there was a segment with ESC Coffee.   They talked about their busy and growing showroom filled with all things needed for your brewer and even sold the machines too.    As soon as I could Dec. 27th, I immediately after Christmas and family obligations made a trip down to ESC Coffee in Burlington, just north of Appleby and North Service Road.

The staff are super friendly, helpful and encourage you to grab a sample of the product first, and brew before you buy.    They have everything for your Keurig, Tassimo, Dolce Gusto etc...  Any product to brew in them from coffee, tea and hot chocolate, as well as accessories (like frothers, syrups and dairy products) to make any fancy drinks.

If you are not local to the Burlington, Waterdown, Oakville area, then you can always order from them on-line.    Their website is www.ecscoffee.com   In the year I have been going there, the showroom keeps growing bigger and bigger and the store is always busy (Christmas is insane!)

If you live closeby, I really encourage you to check them out.    You have no idea just how much product is out there for them until you go.    So many interesting brands that you will just not find at your local grocery store.

You can find them at:

5035 North Service Road Unit C1-C3
Burlington, ON L7L 5V2
Call: (905) 631-1524 or 1-800-263-3890

SHOWROOM HOURS:
Monday – Wednesday: 9am – 5:30pm,
Thursday 9-8,
Friday 9-8
Saturday: 10am – 5pm
Sunday 10am-5pm

Best Tobogganing

So far it has been a warmer and greener winter than we have be used to in this area.    With the fall of snow today, I thought I'd share some great spots to go tobogganing this weekend and take advantage of the natural snowfall. No Tobogganing

In Waterdown, people love to flock to Memorial Park to take advantage of the rolling hills for tobogganing, but the City of Hamilton (which Waterdown is a part of), began putting up signs in it's parks last year warning of a $5000 fine for tobogganing in it's parks.    Seems the City was being sued for injuries that people suffered while tobogganing in City Parks so they began posting those signs last year.    I have not heard of anyone actually being fined, but still, I would not risk it.

As a girl I loved to toboggan at the "Reservoir" in Hamilton located at the corner of Garth & Stonechurch.    I have not been there for years and do not know if there are signs posted there warning of fines but it was always a great spot to toboggan for free.

In looking up great places to go tobogganing in the area, I found recommendations for:

Lowville Park   http://cms.burlington.ca/Page428.aspx

Bronte Creek Provincial Park   http://www.brontecreek.org/explore-bronte-creek.htm

Dundas Valley Conservation Area   http://www.conservationhamilton.ca/area-information/conservation-areas/area-information/dundas-valley

...I also saw comments from parents on-line who recommended Orchard Park (Burlington) just off of Sutton Drive in the Orchards area in East Burlington which

Tobogganing/Sled Recommendations:
#1 – Crazy Carpet – Out of control tobogganing which makes it our number 1. Not ideals for parents doubling up with young children. Safety first!
#2 – Inflatable Tube – This fan favorite is easy on the backside, it’s fast and is awesome over jumps.
#3 – MX Sled – These seem to be rising in popularity in part to x games marketing. Part bike, part snowboard the MX Sled delivers a stand up experience that promotes new tricks and the evolution of tobogganing!
#4 – Snow Moto – Similar to the GT Snow racer of the 80′s and 90′s, this little sled stands up well to abuse. Good for jumps, speed and durability. Many reviews though do insist that kids over 11-12 years old will find it too small to use.
#5 – Wood Toboggan – Had to put this on the list, but more so to say that it’s a waste of money! Do not buy a wood toboggan if you want to toboggan. It’s like the silent rule that almost everyone knows. Don’t be that person that shows up at the hill with your kids carting in this heavy coffee table…

Make sure you are thinking safety too. Especially with toddlers and younger. Helmets are always a good idea and make sure you dress warm. Hot chocolate in a thermos is always a good idea too. Most of all have fun tobogganing!

Best Winter Skating

New Years was a week ago and the kids still have a whole weekend before they head back to school.    If you're like me, you've been trying to find things for your kids to do this week.   One thing you might like to do is try out some of the local arena's and take yourself or your family for a little skate.
In Burlington, Tim Horton's has sponsored free skate days during the Christmas Break.   Admission during the Tim Horton's Holiday Recreational Skating is free, but has limited space and based on first come first served.    Normally, if you do not have a Burlington address, there is an extra $8 fee for non-Burlington Residents on top of normal fees.    This is a great chance to explore the Burlington arenas free of charge.   Skate times this weekend are:

Appleby Ice Centre Arena B:
  • Sat. Jan 7th from 630p-730p, 730p-830p, 830-930p
  • Sun Jan. 8th from 12p-1p and 1p-2p

Nelson Arena:  Sun Jan 8th from 1p-2p and 2p-3p.

Locally right in and near Waterdown we are blessed with many arenas.     There is North Wentworth Arena in Waterdown, Carlisle Arena in Carlisle and Beverly Arena in Rockton.    Please visit the City of Hamilton website to learn more about what is offered at these arenas...
